Argentina Dryness Remains a Concern

MINNEAPOLIS (DTN) -- Warmth and a somewhat active pattern in the U.S. and limited rain in the southern half of South America are the weather factors driving the markets Thursday.

ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN MIDWEST

A system is winding down in the Midwest but will still bring snow showers to the region Thursday before exiting Friday. Another system will move through this weekend with a chance for showers as well, though those should be more isolated. Temperatures remain above normal for this time of year for all but the northwest, which will only be slightly cool for a few days before temperatures rise on Sunday into next week.

DRIER FOR CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Central and Southern Plains will be drier going into next week, with only a slight chance for isolated showers Friday into Saturday. The next meaningful chance for precipitation comes in the middle of next week, though will likely miss the drought areas in the west. Temperatures will remain warm outside of the snowpack across the north.

NORTHERN PLAINS COOLER THROUGH WEEKEND

Drier conditions will continue for the Northern Plains into next week. The next chance for precipitation comes around the middle of next week. Temperatures will be on the cooler side of normal for the next few days but should rise next week.

RISING RIVER LEVELS IN THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI

A strong system brought widespread precipitation not only to the Delta region, but also into the Ohio Valley this week. Recent precipitation has been able to keep water levels from falling too far on the Mississippi River and they are starting to rise as more water moves down through the system.

DRY FOR SOUTHERN BRAZIL

It is dry across southern Brazil until a front comes through toward the end of next week. Showers have been somewhat disappointing recently across the south, which is causing concerns for reproductive to filling corn and soybeans. Otherwise, conditions over central and northern Brazil continue to be favorable for filling soybeans.

HEAT AND DRYNESS FOR ARGENTINA

Dry conditions continue in Argentina until a front moves through early to mid-next week. Showers with that front are expected to be very isolated anyway. Conditions continue to be poor for corn and soybeans in the country as rounds of heat and dryness are only broken up by inadequate showers. That streak looks to continue through most of the month of January.
