Richard Peters, Saint Marys, Kansas, has developed a way to easily replace worn hydrants without digging. When the hydrant is first installed, he puts a 4-inch PVC pipe around the standpipe from above the ground to around the drain port and foot valve. To replace the hydrant, you only need to unthread it and pull it out.

No digging necessary.
