Big Changes Next Week in US

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (DTN) -- A couple of big winter storms next week in the U.S. and a period of some slightly better showers coming up for Argentina and southern Brazil are the weather factors holding the market's attention Friday.

HEAVY MIXED PRECIPITATION FOR MIDWEST

Another clipper moves through the Midwest Friday into Saturday and its cold front will slowly sag south through the region next week, bringing in some colder air and potential for a couple rounds of heavy precipitation.

SOUTHERN PLAINS PRECIPITATION ENDING

Moderate showers for eastern areas of the Southern Plains with two different systems next week could have some beneficial impact, but much lighter activity in the west is expected to have no impact on the ongoing drought.

LIMITED SHOWERS IN PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Dryness over the last several weeks in the Pacific Northwest has taken the momentum out of drought reduction in the region and we could see some drought expansion in some areas. Scattered showers will move through Sunday and Monday, but dry conditions will return for much of the rest of next week.

NORTHERN PLAINS TURNING COLDER NEXT WEEK

Up-and-down temperatures continue in the Northern Plains through the weekend but will then go on a colder stretch next week as cold, Canadian air seeps southward through the country and we get out of the clipper pattern we have seen for the last several weeks. The boundary may produce some heavier snowfall in the region early next week as well.

CANADIAN PRAIRIES TURNING COLDER

Up-and-down temperatures continue in the Canadian Prairies for the next few days as two clipper systems move through the region. Precipitation that comes with the clippers will be very welcome due to the ongoing drought. Some colder temperatures will settle in next week as the main storm track shifts farther south.

LIMITED SHOWERS FOR SOUTHERN BRAZIL

Scattered showers will continue across central and northern Brazil for the next week. Models are pointing at potential for some showers in southern Brazil next week, but again look mostly spotty. Dryness concerns continue in this area of the country for developing safrinha corn. Dry weather has already sealed the fate for full-season corn and first-crop soybeans.

ARGENTINA MAY SEE BETTER SHOWERS NEXT WEEK

Dryness concerns continue over Argentina. Isolated showers may develop through early next week but will be very spotty. A period of better showers takes shape mid- to late-next week and may continue into early March as a few systems move through with more organized activity. If showers next week verify, the moisture and cooler temperatures may ease crop stress temporarily, but the drought will continue.
