Winter Storm Still Rages Thursday

MINNEAPOLIS (DTN) -- Moderate to heavy precipitation moving across a good portion of the U.S. Thursday and a period of some slightly better showers coming up for Argentina and southern Brazil are the weather factors holding the market's attention Thursday.

HEAVY MIXED PRECIPITATION FOR MIDWEST

Moderate to heavy mixed precipitation is tracking across the southeastern half of the Midwest on Thursday. Another clipper moves through Friday into Saturday and its cold front will slowly sag south through the region next week, bringing in some colder air and potential for additional heavy precipitation.

SOUTHERN PLAINS PRECIPITATION ENDING

Moderate to heavy showers for eastern areas of the Southern Plains could have some impact on the drought, but much lighter activity in the west is expected to have no impact as the showers leave Thursday. A frontal boundary will move into the region next week, but models are not consistent on how to develop precipitation across the area. There is some potential for beneficial precipitation, however.

DROUGHT BUILDING FOR PACIFIC NORTHWEST DESPITE SOME SHOWERS

Dryness in the Pacific Northwest over the last several weeks has taken the momentum out of drought reduction in the region and we could see some drought expansion in some areas. Scattered showers will move through Sunday and Monday, but dry conditions will return for much of the rest of next week.

NORTHERN PLAINS TURNING COLDER NEXT WEEK

Up-and-down temperatures continue in the Northern Plains through the weekend but will then go on a colder stretch next week as Canadian air seeps southward through the country and we get out of the clipper pattern we have seen for the last several weeks. The boundary may produce some heavier snowfall in the region early next week.

CANADIAN PRAIRIES TURNING COLDER

Up-and-down temperatures are forecast in the Canadian Prairies for the next few days as a few clipper systems move through the region. Precipitation with the clippers will be very welcome due to the ongoing drought. Colder temperatures are likely to settle in next week as the main storm track shifts farther south.

LIMITED SHOWERS FOR SOUTHERN BRAZIL

Scattered showers will continue across central and northern Brazil for the next week. Models are pointing at potential for some showers in southern Brazil late this week going into next week, but again look mostly spotty. Dryness concerns continue in this area of the country for developing safrinha corn. Dry weather has already sealed the fate for full-season corn and first-crop soybeans.

ARGENTINA MAY SEE BETTER SHOWERS NEXT WEEK

Dryness concerns continue over Argentina with limited showers going into next week. But starting mid-late next week there will be a period of about a week of better showers falling across the country. If showers verify, the moisture and cooler temperatures may ease crop stress temporarily.
