OMAHA (DTN) -- Limited rain in the forecast for dry areas of the western Midwest and showers hindering wheat harvest in the Southern Plains are the primary weather features for the commodity market's attention Thursday.

MIXED MIDWEST RAIN PROSPECTS

The DTN Ag Weather forecast calls for widely mixed rain prospects in the Midwest during the next week. Heavy amounts are expected in the southeastern and southern sectors along with a threat of flooding. Western areas have light to locally moderate amounts in store. In addition, periods of very warm to hot conditions are indicated for the drier areas. Soil moisture in the northern and northwestern Midwest remains well below average as corn goes into pollination and soybeans enter flowering and pod setting.

SHOWERS DELAY SOUTHERN PLAINS HARVEST

Southern Plains wheat harvest is notably snarled by persistent shower and thunderstorm activity. Kansas harvest reports note slowdowns in progress along with quality issues developing due to the continued precipitation. Scattered showers remain in the forecast through the weekend. The first half of next week has a drier trend indicated.

LIGHT NORTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE

Northern Plains areas will have a dry and hot pattern to finish out the week with continued stress to wheat, corn and soybeans. The seven-day forecast suggests a chance for light to locally moderate rainfall. This prospect will be closely watched.

DELTA AND SOUTHEAST RAINFALL

Showers and thunderstorms will increase in the Delta and Southeast through the weekend. The rain offers soil moisture benefit after a drier trend in the last week.

SCATTERED PRAIRIES SHOWERS

In the Canadian Prairies, the next week features mostly above normal temperatures and only scattered rain shower activity. Soil moisture continues to decrease for most areas.

BRAZIL FROST

Frost and freeze conditions have caused some damage to winter corn in south-central Brazil. There is a chance for this cold pattern to move further north during this late-week time frame, indicating additional damage potential.

VARIABLE RUSSIA RAIN CHANCE

Rainfall is forecast for western Ukraine and northwestern Russia crop areas through the weekend. Eastern Ukraine through South Russia and the Volga Valley will continue in a dry pattern. Crop moisture has been declining due to very warm to hot and dry conditions in the past week. Some showers are indicated to move into South Russia during the first part of next week.
