Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- A harsh cold wave for the central United States and continued minimal precipitation for the winter corn areas of Brazil are the primary weather features for the commodity market's attention Monday.

MIDWEST COLD

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a cold pattern through the Midwest along with rain and snow showers during the first half of the week. Hard freezes may occur for much of the region, doing damage to winter wheat and early planted corn.

FREEZE FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Much of the Southern Plains has a threat of freezing temperatures during the first half of this week. The cold is threatening to winter wheat, notably in areas where heading is either imminent or has already occurred. The cold may also damage emerged corn. Precipitation will mainly develop in the eastern sectors where recent moisture has been most notable.

COLD AND DRY FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

Northern Plains crop areas remain mostly dry except for a swath of snow in the southern sector. Drought is well-established in much of the region. Temperatures will be well-below normal, keeping spring fieldwork delayed in addition to snow in areas affected by that event.

MODERATE DELTA RAIN

Periods of rain will continue in the Delta early this week. Some fieldwork delays are possible.

SOUTHEAST STORMS

In the Southeast, several periods of rain are in store during the week ahead with moderate to heavy precipitation. This stormy trend will cause delays in additional fieldwork progress.

STILL DRY IN PRAIRIES

The Canadian Prairies have little to no follow-up precipitation following locally heavy snow a week ago. Dryness is expected to continue into May.

MINIMAL BRAZIL SHOWERS

Most Brazil winter corn areas have only light rainfall ahead this week. This is unfavorable for the winter corn crop.

HEAVY ARGENTINA RAIN FORECAST

Across Argentina, widespread rain in the next five days will cause a new round of harvest delays.

DRY IN EUROPE

Across Europe, below average precipitation is indicated in the 10-day forecast. This is unfavorable for wheat and rapeseed.

CONTINUED BLACK SEA SHOWERS

Scattered showers continue in the Black Sea region through the weekend, bringing favorable soil moisture for greening and developing winter wheat in Russia and Ukraine.
