OMAHA (DTN) -- A strong winter storm and blizzard shutting down harvest and fieldwork in the Northern Plains and also creating a dangerous situation for cattle, and mostly favorable conditions for South America, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

STORMS FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast for the Midwest calls for mostly rain south and east and a mix of snow, ice and rain northwest, during the next 24 to 48 hours. Delays to late-fall harvest activities, travel and transport. A more favorable weather pattern for the much-delayed corn and soybean harvests follows this period. No significant cold weather in the soft red winter wheat areas is expected during the next 10 days.

BLIZZARD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, a new storm is likely to bring heavy snow, some ice, strong winds and blizzard conditions to the region late Friday, Friday evening and during Saturday. This may mean an end to the harvest season in the region for this year. It likely will bring travel and transport to a standstill as well. It is a significant risk to livestock.

STORM FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains will have rain in the east, and drier with strong winds west, due to the storm moving through the north-central U.S. during the next 24 to 48 hours. The strong winds with little precipitation through west-central areas likely dries out soils further, increasing the risk to winter wheat. Favorable moisture conditions are forecast elsewhere in the belt for wheat. Temperatures are not expected to be low enough to harm wheat. There will be limited stress to livestock due to some icing northwest and north-central areas for a time.

STORMY, COLD FOR WESTERN U.S.

For the western U.S., moderate to heavy snow, ice and rain is expected to affect much of the region from California through the central and southern Rockies mountain region during the next five to seven days. This is likely to be heavy snow in the mountains and some lower-elevation snow as well. It will also mean flooding, possibly severe flooding, especially in areas that do not normally see much in the way of heavy rain. Travel will be greatly affected.

RAIN FOR BRAZIL

In Brazil, rainfall has occurred through most soybean and corn areas during this week and will favor development of early planted crops. It will cause only minor delays to planting. There are no significant concerns at this time.

DRYING TREND FOR ARGENTINA

Argentina has a drying trend with a variable temperature pattern but not much hot weather during the next seven days. Conditions are favorable for planting and early development of corn and soybeans. Some local dryness continues, but many areas have favorable moisture at this time.
