OMAHA (DTN) -- Two upcoming storm systems within the next five days shutting down harvest and fieldwork efforts in the Corn Belt and Northern Plains, some precipitation to help the winter wheat crop in the Southern Plains, and favorable conditions for South America crops, are key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

STORMS FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast for the Midwest calls for snow, ice and rain west and with rain or showers east Tuesday into Wednesday. Heavy snow, 6-12 inches, is expected in Nebraska, northwest Iowa, southeast South Dakota and Minnesota. Impact to travel, transport and harvesting will be high. A second storm, Friday into Saturday, may bring more rain than snow to the Midwest but additional significant impacts to travel, transport and harvesting are likely.

HEAVY SNOW FOR FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, the first of two significant snow storms mostly stays south of this area today. The second storm is likely to bring heavy snow, strong winds and blizzard conditions to the region Friday into Saturday. This may mean an end to the harvest season in the region for this year. It likely will also bring travel and transport to a standstill. It is a significant risk to livestock.

SNOW, WIND FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains forecast sees 5-10 inches of snow for northeast Colorado, northwest Kansas and much of southern Nebraska today into tonight. High winds in the southwest plains today has triggered high wind advisories because of concerns about wildfires. There will be increased stress to livestock. Precipitation during the five-day period improves soil moisture for wheat. There will be a variable temperature pattern but nothing that looks low enough to harm wheat at this stage.

STORMY, COLD FOR WESTERN U.S.

For the western U.S., moderate to heavy snow, ice and rain is expected to affect much of the region from California through the central and southern Rockies mountain region during the next five days. This is likely to be heavy snow in the mountains and some lower elevation snow as well. It will also mean flooding, possibly severe flooding, especially in areas that do not normally see much in the way of heavy rain. Travel will be greatly affected.

RAIN FOR BRAZIL

Beneficial rainfall for developing soybeans is expected throughout the major growing areas of Brazil today into Thursday. Hot and dry weather continue to affect soybean planting and development in the northeast (Bahia).

RAINS HELP ARGENTINA

For Argentina, rainfall that has occurred during the past 48 hours will provide needed moisture for planting and early development of corn and soybeans. There will be some temporary planting delays.
