OMAHA (DTN) -- Upcoming storm systems shutting down harvest and fieldwork efforts in the Corn Belt and Northern Plains, snow improving moisture for the winter wheat crop in the Southern Plains, and favorable forecasts for South America, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

STORMY MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for snow, ice and rain west with rain or showers east Tuesday into Wednesday in the Midwest. This is likely to affect harvest progress for a time. The next system, likely Friday into the weekend, will bring mostly rain and thunderstorms to the east and south areas with rain possibly changing to snow northwest. This will cause additional serious delays to late seasonal fieldwork, as well as affect travel and transport.

IMPACT ON LIVESTOCK IN NORTH, WEST PLAINS

A powerful early-season storm is expected to bring strong winds and heavy snow to the north and west Plains at the end of this week. There is at least a significant risk that this would also include blizzard conditions, and likely to greatly affect travel and transport and increase stress to livestock. A somewhat more moderate storm misses the area just south and east early this week, which will also be watched.

MAJOR WINTER STORM AHEAD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, northeast areas may see some snow today, affecting the harvest in a local area. Dry weather elsewhere in the region at this time will allow some harvest of corn and soybeans. A major winter storm later this week may put an end to any additional harvest this year. Some crop may be lost, especially any unharvested soybeans. This is also likely to greatly affect travel and transport.

SNOW FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains forecast is for increasing precipitation to improve soil moisture conditions in the wheat areas. Snow, 4-8 inches, in northwest areas Tuesday into Wednesday will increase stress to livestock for a time this week. A variable temperature pattern is seen, but nothing that looks low enough to harm wheat at this stage.

STORMY, COLDER FOR WESTERN U.S.

Moderate to heavy snow, ice and rain are expected to affect much of the region from California through the central and southern Rockies mountain region during this week, especially Wednesday through Friday. This is likely to mean heavy snow in the mountains and some lower elevation snow as well. It will also mean flooding, possibly severe flooding, especially in areas that do not normally see much in the way of heavy rain. Travel will be greatly affected.

RAIN FOR BRAZIL

Beneficial rainfall for developing soybeans is expected throughout the major growing areas of Brazil this week, beginning in the south and spreading to the north. Hot and dry weather continue to affect soybean planting and development in the northeast (Bahia).

RAINS HELP ARGENTINA

Thunderstorms overnight into Monday provided needed moisture for planting and early crop development. Cool weather helps ease stress to crops. There's some temporary delay to planting.
