OMAHA (DTN) -- A hot, drier trend for the main corn and soybean crop areas in the U.S., a more favorable outlook for the growing spring wheat crop in the Northern Plains and Canadian Prairies, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

HOT, DRY MIDWEST OUTLOOK

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for hot, dry weather to increase stress to developing to reproductive corn and soybeans in the Midwest today and Saturday. Thunderstorms break this heat in the Western Corn Belt during the weekend while the Eastern Corn Belt cools off with a few showers later in the weekend. There is not much rainfall forecast for the Midwest next week with temperatures mostly above normal. Soils will dry out with time and crops stress will increase.

NO SIGNIFICANT RAIN FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

No significant rain is being forecast for the Central and Southern Plains during the next 10 days. Episodes of hot, dry weather favor mature wheat and wheat harvesting while increasing stress to corn, soybeans and sorghum, especially reproductive crops.

CONTINUED WEST TEXAS HEAT

West Texas cotton areas will see its drier weather pattern continue for next week. Temperatures will be mostly above normal.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE CONDITIONS FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

The Northern Plains will see mostly favorable weather for developing corn, soybeans and spring wheat during the next 10 days. Thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain, strong winds and hail may have caused problems for local farms overnight.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE PATTERN FOR PRAIRIES

In the Canadian Prairies, a variable temperature pattern and episodes of showers will favor developing crops at this time. Rainfall appears most likely through central and east areas during the next seven to 10 days with cooler conditions in the west and warm conditions in the east. Wet conditions in southeast Saskatchewan may be somewhat unfavorable; however, most everyone else that receives rain would benefit.

SOUTH RUSSIA STAYS HOT

Temperature highs reached the low 100s Fahrenheit in southern Russia Thursday and will likely be similar today. Southeast Ukraine was in the middle to upper 90s F Thursday and should be Friday as well. These areas should cool off somewhat with a few showers moving in during the weekend.

However, the below- to well-below-normal rainfall pattern and the above-normal temperature pattern is expected to continue during the next 10 days. There are increasing losses to corn and sunflower grown in these locations.

DRIER SHORT-TERM NORTHEAST CHINA TREND

Temperatures turn higher and rain chances diminish during the next three to four days, especially through south and central areas of northeast China.

Longer range, shower threats increase again and temperatures moderate. No major concerns are seen at this time, but this will be watched.

NORTH CHINA PLAIN HEAT

Temperatures of 91 to 100 F were reported in the central and east areas Thursday in the North China Plain. Dry and hot weather will cover most of the North China Plain area Friday through Sunday. Monday and Tuesday, scattered thundershowers may move through southwest to south-central areas, but the balance should continue drier while turning a little cooler. The weather pattern next week after Tuesday looks to feature below- or well-below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures. Increasing stress is expected for developing summer crops.

MORE CENTRAL INDIA RAIN

In India, moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms occurred through northwest and central interior locations Thursday with rain also along the west coast and scattered showers through east-central and a little of northeast India. The outlook suggests that thunderstorms will be in the western part of north India for one to three more days, but after that, the activity diminishes again.

Rain next week looks to reform over eastern areas of north India and northern areas of south India. Key growing areas for groundnuts and cotton in Gujarat need more rain to ensure favorable germination and early development. Key growing areas of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have received generous rains this week, favoring soybeans, sorghum, cotton and sugarcane in these locations.
