Mostly Favorable Pattern

OMAHA (DTN) -- A pattern featuring periods of showers and summertime warmth in the Midwest, and improving rainfall trends in the Canadian Prairies, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

BENEFICIAL MIDWEST PROSPECTS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a continued favorable weather pattern for developing corn and soybeans in the Midwest during the next 10 days. Periods of showers will maintain adequate soil moisture, despite episodes of above- to much-above-normal temperatures.

HOTTER AND DRIER IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, above- to much-above-normal temperatures and little rainfall will increase stress on developing corn and soybeans, especially any corn entering pollination. Hot and dry weather will also stress filling wheat in western Kansas. Showers early this week are offering some short-term benefit.

SPOTTY WEST TEXAS RAIN

Scattered thunderstorms occurred in the west Texas region overnight. Beneficial rainfall was likely very spotty. Hot and dry conditions are set to redevelop, and rainfall chances remain rather limited, during the next seven to 10 days.

USEFUL NORTHERN PLAINS SHOWERS

The Northern Plains continue with generally favorable conditions for development of spring wheat, corn and soybeans. Episodes of scattered showers to widely scattered showers help to ease dryness.

BENIGN DELTA TREND

In the Delta, conditions are mostly favorable for corn, soybeans and cotton.

SHOWERS BENEFIT PRAIRIES

The Canadian Prairies have improving soil moisture for developing crops, especially in eastern Saskatchewan and Manitoba after moderate to heavy showers and thundershowers late last week. This may delay fieldwork, but early and recently planted crops will benefit.

DRY IN NORTHEASTERN CHINA

Northeastern China had hot and dry conditions over the main corn and soybean areas during the weekend. Middle to upper 90s Fahrenheit were recorded in the northeast China region. This, when combined with, in some cases, less than 50% of normal May rain, leads to increasing stress on crops. The rainfall potential during the next week appears limited. The northeast should turn somewhat cooler early this week. Meanwhile, the North China Plain will have fairly hot conditions for several more days.

LIMITED AUSTRALIA RAIN FORECAST

Across Australia, recent showers have brought some improvement to soil moisture in Western Australia wheat areas. However, New South Wales and southern Queensland need still more rain, especially through the eastern part of the area. Showers may move across there early this week; however, the chances for significant rainfall this week appears fairly limited.

NEAR-NORMAL INDIA MONSOON PROGRESS

The leading edge of the India monsoon is currently located in southern Karnataka and extreme southern Andhra Pradesh. This is near normal on the west coast and about five days behind normal on the east coast. Scattered thundershowers have occurred well north of this line during the weekend period. This helps to condition soils for planting Kharif (summer) crops in southern and northeast India. The rain is nearing key growing areas for groundnut and soybeans and rain has already reach some important growing areas for sugarcane, cotton and sorghum.
