Delayed Midwest Fieldwork

OMAHA (DTN) -- Continued fieldwork delays due to wet and cold conditions in the Midwest, and promising rain chances in the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

UNSETTLED MIDWEST PATTERN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for snow, rain and ice over the western and northern Midwest through Wednesday. Precipitation and cold spring temperatures will keep fieldwork at a standstill for a while longer. A slow warm-up and a storm track well to the south may allow conditions to improve somewhat during the 10-day period. However, showers may form again during the final weekend of April, causing new delays.

COLD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, cold weather continues to delay any early spring fieldwork in northern areas and also maintain above normal stress levels on livestock. A somewhat improving temperature pattern is possible during the 10-day period; however, driest areas of North Dakota have very little moisture indicated.

WEEKEND SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN CHANCE

The Southern Plains forecast continues to offer beneficial rain in most winter wheat areas later in the week. Up until then, winds and low relative humidity will maintain high stress levels on wheat. Wildfire danger is at extreme levels in many areas Tuesday.

BRIEF DRIER DELTA TREND

Rain and thunderstorms return to the Delta during the coming weekend. Until then, a drier and warmer period may help to improve conditions for fieldwork.

COLD CANADIAN PRAIRIES PATTERN

The main Canadian Prairies planting season begins in early May. Cold early spring weather will likely limit early fieldwork and may delay the start of the planting season. Topsoil moisture has improved in some locations during the spring, but subsoil moisture is likely still quite low. The spring flood risk is expected to be low.

VARIABLE BRAZIL RAIN

Brazil has some variability in its rainfall forecast. Scattered thundershowers and near- to below-normal temperatures will continue to favor corn in Mato Grosso, Goias and a portion of Mato Gross do Sul over the next five days. Meanwhile, Parana will be drier.
