Midwest to Stay Wet and Cool

OMAHA (DTN) -- Additional chills in the Midwest, and ongoing drought stress in the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

MORE COLD AND WET MIDWEST CONDITIONS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for additional low temperatures and wet fields to keep Midwest spring fieldwork very slow or completely stranded through the weekend. A milder trend is indicated during next week; however, additional rain chances are also noted, leading to further delays in spring fieldwork and corn planting.

MORE NORTHERN PLAINS COLD WEATHER

In the Northern Plains, very cold weather and periods of rain or snow have fieldwork at a standstill. This combination leads to the potential for a lower-planted acreage total for spring wheat. In addition, cold and wet conditions are unfavorable for livestock. No pattern change is indicated through the weekend.

RAIN BYPASSES SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains region has no significant precipitation expected during the next 10 days. The pattern also features more wind than rain, possibly strong winds. Winter wheat ratings remain poor in many areas.

WEEKEND DELTA RAIN

In the Delta, heavy rain through the weekend will likely disrupt corn planting. The area may see more heavy rain later in the six- to 10-day period.

ARGENTINA THUNDERSTORMS

Central Argentina has moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms through Sunday indicated, with high coverage in central crop areas. Rainfall this late in the season, and on the heels of an extreme summer drought, is unlikely to change prospects for either corn or soybeans. However, the moisture may slow the decline in late-filling crops somewhat.

DRIER FOR SOUTHERN BRAZIL HARVEST

Across Brazil, favorable soil moisture for developing second-crop (safrinha) corn in central Brazil is still in effect, with additional heavy rains reported in Mato Grosso corn areas this week. A drier period in Rio Grande do Sul in the south is expected to last through next week. This will favor row crop harvest.

TEMPERATURE SWINGS IN CHINA

In central China, colder weather is in store through Saturday, before moderating Sunday. A warmer pattern returns for much of next week. The cold front brought significant rains back to the southern half of the region, which will maintain favorable moisture conditions for development of winter wheat and rapeseed, while the lower temperatures slow development for a time. We have also noted light to moderate showers through central and north areas with the cold front passage that will slow the recent drying trend. However, these areas will need more rain to favor jointing to reproductive wheat during the next few weeks, and the prospect for follow-up precipitation is uncertain.
