OMAHA (DTN) -- Light rain in the central Argentina forecast, and deepening drought in the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

LIMITED ARGENTINA RAINFALL

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for another very hot day Thursday in the central Argentina crop belt. Cooler weather and rain showers are forecast through the coming weekend. This should help ease stress to developing and reproductive crops. However, damage to crops has likely already been done. Forecast rain will not be enough to replenish dry soils following heat and dryness in recent weeks.

SHOWERS ACROSS BRAZIL

Across Brazil, a recent drier trend over southern crop areas should come to an end later this weekend or early next week. It has not been too hot during this drier period, so crops should continue to do well, especially if showers develop as expected later this weekend. A return to wet weather in Mato Grosso may further delay the harvest of soybeans and the planting of second-crop corn.

EXPANDING SOUTHERN PLAINS DROUGHT

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows that extreme drought now covers the majority of the southwestern Plains, with the remainder of the region in some phase of drought. There is no significant precipitation indicated in the region during the next seven days. In addition, a series of cold waves from the Canadian Prairies are expected to spread through the region, and may bring some additional stress to winter wheat.

NEW SNOWSTORM FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains and northern Midwest, snow in South Dakota and Iowa Thursday, and northern Illinois to northern Ohio and southern Michigan and Wisconsin Thursday night and Friday will affect transport. After Friday, the region should be drier with improving conditions for transport. Extreme cold over the Northern plains continues for a few more days. Some moderation is possible next week.
