OMAHA (DTN) -- Favorable weather for the Midwest, and beneficial moderate to heavy rains ahead for the hard red winter wheat belt, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE WEATHER FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for the Midwest to have favorable weather for maturing corn and soybeans. There will be some disruptions to any early harvest in the western Midwest; however, rainfall recharges soil moisture. No damaging cold weather is expected during the next seven days. During the weekend, moderate to heavy amounts of rain are expected in the western Midwest, favoring northern and western areas.

TROPICAL UPDATE

Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico this morning as a Category 4 hurricane. It will cross Puerto Rico today, and pass just north of the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic tonight and Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 155 mph with higher gusts. Maria is an extremely dangerous hurricane.

Tropical Storm Jose was located 195 miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Jose is moving toward the northeast almost 8 miles per hour, and this general motion is expected to continue through today with a decrease in forward speed. On the forecast track, the center of Jose is expected to pass well to the east of the New Jersey coast today, and pass offshore of southeastern Massachusetts Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next couple of days.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS FOR DELTA, SOUTHEAST

Favorable weather for maturing and harvesting crops is seen for the Delta and Southeast areas during the next seven days.

BENEFICIAL SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN

In the Southern Plains, some beneficial rainfall for planting and emergence of winter wheat is expected during the next seven days. These episodes of scattered showers and thunderstorms will take place Friday to Tuesday and will bring moderate to heavy rain totals.

FAVORABLE WEST TEXAS OUTLOOK

Favorable weather is forecast for the developing and maturing crop in west Texas.

NORTHERN PLAINS CONDITIONS MAINLY FAVORABLE

In the Northern Plains, conditions are favorable for filling and maturing corn and soybeans at this time. Rainfall disrupts the early harvest but recharges soil moisture. No damaging cold weather is expected.

RAIN NEEDED IN BRAZIL

Rain is needed to initiate soybean planting in the northern Mato Grosso. Dry weather is expected during the next seven days, but some rain may develop beyond that.

AUSTRALIA DRYNESS

Dry weather increases stress on developing wheat in northeast Australia. Little rainfall is expected in this region during the next five days.
