OMAHA (DTN) -- A cool, dry pattern continuing with limited chances for significant moisture in the Corn Belt and Northern Plains, dryness issues continuing in some areas of the Western Corn Belt and the Canadian Prairies, and rains for the next few days in the Southern Plains wheat area, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

COOL, MAINLY DRY IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for more favorable weather for filling corn and soybeans in the western Midwest due to near- to below-normal temperatures. However, drought stress continues in some areas, especially southern and western Iowa. There's mostly favorable weather for filling corn and soybeans in the eastern Midwest, although more rain would benefit in parts of Illinois. No significant moisture is seen for the Corn Belt for the next seven days.

RAIN FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains crop areas have generally favorable conditions for developing crops. Rainfall of moderate to locally heavier amounts is forecast for the next five days, which will offer additional benefit overall, especially for planting hard red winter wheat in September. For west Texas, there are generally favorable conditions for developing cotton.

COOLER, LIMITED RAIN IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, cooler weather will ease stress to later-filling corn and soybeans. However, rainfall remains limited as drought stress continues.

TROPICAL STORM FRANKLIN

As of Thursday morning, Tropical Storm Franklin was located 105 miles west-northwest of Vera Cruz, Mexico. Franklin is moving a little south of west near 15 miles per hour and this motion is expected to continue today. On the forecast track, the center of Franklin should continue to move across eastern Mexico today. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 70 mph with higher gusts. Additional rapid weakening is expected as Franklin moves across eastern Mexico, and the cyclone is likely to dissipate late Thursday or early Friday.

LIMITED RAIN FOR PRAIRIES

Major losses to spring wheat are due to hot, dry weather in July for the Canadian Prairies. More favorable weather is expected for canola, which is mostly grown in northern areas. Rain chances into next week are limited for the Prairies.

RAIN HELPS UKRAINE YIELDS

Yield prospects for crops remain near to above normal over much of Ukraine and Russia due to above-normal rainfall during the past 30 days in much of the region.

FAVORABLE NORTHEAST CHINA RAIN

Beneficial rain continues for reproductive to filling corn and soybeans in northeast China.

DRIER IN WEST INDIA TREND

Drier weather favors planting and developing oilseeds and cotton in the major growing areas of west-central India.

MORE RAIN NEEDED IN AUSTRALIA

Some beneficial rain for wheat in Australia has occurred; however, more will be needed in southeast areas to improve yield prospects after a dry start to the growing season.
