Mixed Midwest Rain Forecast

OMAHA (DTN) -- A mixed rain forecast across the Midwest, and continued drought issues in the Canadian Prairies, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST RAIN CHANCE

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a more variable round of rain in the Midwest than previous forecasts. Generally favorable conditions are indicated for filling corn and soybeans in the western Midwest. However, some significant dry areas still exist in Iowa as crop ratings continue to fall. Meanwhile, eastern Midwest states of Indiana and Ohio are in line for moderate to locally-heavy rain. This moisture would actually be unfavorable for crops in this sector of the region, due to wet soils.

FAVORABLE SOUTHERN PLAINS PATTERN

Southern Plains crop areas remain in line for moderate to heavy rain and mostly below-normal temperatures through the end of the week. This rain will be useful for easing crop moisture stress in row crops and cotton. In addition, pasture and hay conditions will improve along with soil moisture for winter wheat planting during September.

LIGHT NORTHERN PLAINS RAIN

In the Northern Plains, light to moderate rain crossed the region Tuesday into Wednesday. A few more showers are again indicated during this week. However, the impact of crop-withering heat and drought has already caused extensive losses to spring wheat, and those effects are noted in row crops as well.

CONTINUED PRAIRIES DRYNESS

In the Canadian Prairies, periods of above- to much-above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall continue to be stressful for heading and filling spring wheat and developing canola. Significant crop losses are expected. Southern Saskatchewan recorded the driest month of July in 130 years in 2017.

VARIABLE UKRAINE AND RUSSIA PROSPECTS

Crop weather features show no change for Ukraine and Russia. Dry conditions lead to the potential for reduced production in Ukraine, where the north-central and central areas have dealt with dry conditions much of this season. In Russia, favorable conditions are in effect, with early wheat harvest reports indicating higher yields than a year ago.

HEAVY WESTERN INDIA RAIN

In western India, Gujarat has seen some wet-weather damage to recently- emerged cotton and groundnuts. Drier weather is occurring this week. In other key western cotton and oilseed areas, soil moisture is generally adequate to locally excessive.
