OMAHA (DTN)-- Widely variable Midwest conditions, and more heat and dryness in the U.S. Plains and Canadian Prairies, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

MIXED MIDWEST TREND

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for limited rainfall and above-normal temperatures over central and southern portions of the western Midwest to increase stress to corn and soybeans, especially pollinating corn. Some crop losses can be expected. Northern Iowa and southern Minnesota should experience beneficial rainfall and more moderate temperatures. Mostly favorable crop conditions remain over the eastern Midwest.

STRESSFUL HEAT IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, hot to very hot conditions and only isolated shower activity increase stress to reproductive crops during the next few days. Scattered showers and cooler temperatures should ease stress to crops for a time early in the 6-10-day period but additional episodes of heat are likely after that.

DRY FORECAST IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, episodes of hot weather and limited rainfall are expected to continue to significantly stress crops. Major losses to spring wheat have already occurred. Pollinating corn is now being impacted with significant losses likely.

CONTINUED SOUTHERN PRAIRIES DRYNESS

Much of the Canadian Prairies remain hot and dry. The driest area remains southern Saskatchewan which has seen below normal rainfall since early May. Significant losses to spring wheat are expected.

BENEFICIAL CONDITIONS IN UKRAINE

Improved crop prospects are featured in central and northern Ukraine. Good to excellent summer crop prospects are also in effect in west Ukraine. Favorable conditions are noted in east Ukraine. Conditions remain favorable for summer crops in Russia.

USEFUL RAIN IN NORTHEASTERN CHINA

In northeastern China, beneficial rains for crops in all but far western areas have occurred this week.

FAVORABLE INDIA MONSOON RAIN

In the major India crop areas, heavy rains in Gujarat are generally beneficial despite some flooding. Mostly favorable moisture conditions are noted in the major soybean areas of western Madhya Pradesh. Some more rain in Maharashtra, however, would benefit.

AUSTRALIA DRYNESS CONCERN

In Australia, enough rain to sustain the wheat crop at this time of the year in Western Australia. More rain is needed in southeastern Australia to prevent a further decline in crop conditions. Despite below-normal rainfall in the northeast, yield prospects are better than in the southeast.
