OMAHA (DTN) -- Prospects for a more mixed pattern of rain and heat in the Midwest and continued harsh drought in the Northern Plains are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST CONDITIONS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for scattered showers followed by a cooling trend during the next few days to favor developing to early reproductive crops in the Midwest, except in parts of the east where heavy rains Tuesday will maintain unfavorable conditions. Drier and hotter trends over the next ten days bear watching, but the greatest impact is likely to impact crops in westernmost areas and least likely in the north and east areas.

SOUTHERN PLAINS HEAT

In the Southern Plains, a hotter and drier pattern continues in the forecast through the rest of the week. This suggest increased stress to row crops, hay and pastures.

MORE DROUGHT IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, drought remains in effect. Extensive loss to spring wheat production is noted, and reduce production in corn is also likely. Milder temperatures during the next few days will ease stress on livestock from recent very hot conditions.

MINIMAL SOUTHERN PRAIRIES RAIN

In the Canadian Prairies, dryness is of much concern in an area centered on southwest and central Saskatchewan. Showers Monday and Tuesday brought some easing; however, the dry pattern returns through the remainder of the week.

SCATTERED UKRAINE SHOWERS

Scattered showers and cooler conditions are indicated for Russia and Ukraine through Thursday. Rainfall is most needed in a very dry area of north-central Ukraine. Showers appear likely for at least a portion of this area. Longer-range rain chances shift into south and east Ukraine and south Russia.

MOSTLY DRY AND HOT IN NORTHEAST CHINA

Northeast China still has a hot and dry pattern through the next week to 10 days. Rainfall is needed to support favorable reproduction and filling of crops.

FAVORABLE WEST INDIA RAIN CHANCE

Western India crop areas of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat have a continued good chance for rain this week. Showers would be beneficial for soybeans, cotton and groundnuts. However, cotton and sugarcane areas of Maharashtra have a lower chance for needed rain.

DRY AUSTRALIA FORECAST

Major Australia wheat areas have a dry forecast through the weekend. Showers in the past 10 days brought some easing of dry conditions to most wheat areas; however, the benefit from the moisture is short-lived due to longer-term below-normal precipitation.
