OMAHA (DTN) -- A threat of crop-stressing heat in the western Midwest and very little rain for the Northern Plains are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

HOTTER MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a turn to drier and hotter conditions over the western Midwest beginning later in the five-day period and continuing during the six- to 10-day period. This pattern is expected to increase the threat to crops in Minnesota and Iowa that are currently mostly in good-to-excellent condition. Wet weather and wet conditions remain of concern in eastern Midwest crop areas. These areas may also trend somewhat drier and hotter with time.

HEAT AND DRYNESS FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, hotter and drier conditions increase the prospect of stress to row crops during the balance of this week.

MINIMAL NORTHERN PLAINS RAIN

In the Northern Plains, limited rainfall along with episodes of above- to much-above-normal temperatures will continue to affect heading and filling spring wheat and developing corn and soybeans. Significant losses to spring wheat can be expected. Losses to pollinating corn can be expected if this pattern continues during the next few weeks.

SOUTHERN PRAIRIES DRYNESS

In the Canadian Prairies, dryness is of much concern in an area centered on southwest and central Saskatchewan. Showers may be in the region again Tuesday, helping to ease stress to crops somewhat, but dry and hot weather redevelops after that and lasts at least five days.

SCATTERED UKRAINE SHOWERS

In Ukraine and Russia, drier and somewhat hotter conditions are in store through Wednesday. Scattered showers and cooler conditions favoring west and central areas are indicated later this week. Rainfall is most needed in the chronically dry areas of north-central Ukraine. This area may see at least some scattered thundershower activity along with cooler temperatures during the week.

HEAT FOR NORTHEAST CHINA

Northeast China looks to be hot and dry during the next week to 10 days. Rainfall is needed to support favorable reproduction and filling of crops in the areas.

WEST INDIA LATE-WEEK RAIN

Western India crop areas of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat have increased rain chances this week, which would be favorable for soybeans, cotton and groundnuts. The key growing areas of Maharashtra may miss much of this rain chance. This area is an important growing area for cotton and sugarcane.

CONTINUED AUSTRALIA DRYNESS

Major Australia wheat areas continue to be dry. There is little meaningful rain in the forecast during the balance of the week to ease the situation.
