Corn Belt Rain Divide

OMAHA (DTN) -- Widely variable rainfall in the central U.S., and continued drought over the Northern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

MIDWEST RAIN DIVIDE

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a broad divide in rainfall across the Midwest. Dry and hot conditions will increase stress to corn and soybeans in the western areas, especially in Nebraska, but possibly in western Iowa as well. Areas from central Iowa eastward will not be as hot or as dry and should have more favorable conditions for developing and reproductive crops during the next week.

HOT AND DRY IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains row crops will undergo stress due to mostly hot and dry conditions during this week.

DROUGHT GRIPS NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, limited rainfall along with above-to-much-above normal temperatures stresses heading and filling spring wheat and developing corn and soybeans. Significant losses to spring wheat can be expected. Losses to pollinating corn are also likely.

LIMITED PRAIRIES RAIN

Dryness is still of much concern in an area centered on southwest and central Saskatchewan. Showers may be in the region Monday and Tuesday, helping to ease stress to crops somewhat, but dry and hot weather redevelops after that and lasts at least five days.

PROMISING UKRAINE FORECAST

Scattered showers and a more variable temperature pattern will favor crops in Ukraine and south Russia during the next week. Rainfall is still needed in the dry areas of north-central Ukraine. The forecast suggests a good chance for needed rainfall in this area by the end of this week.

WEEKEND CHINA SHOWERS

In northeast China, light to moderate rain and cooler weather were noted over the weekend. This should improve conditions for early developing crops. However, more rain is still needed.

POSSIBLE WEST INDIA LATE-WEEK RAIN

In northeastern India, a significant disturbance is expected to form later this week and gradually drift westward. This will lead to improving rainfall for key oilseed, cotton and sugarcane areas of west-central India.

MORE AUSTRALIA DRYNESS

Major Australia wheat areas continue to be dry. The area of most concern is in the southeast, but Western Australia, South Australia, and southern Queensland are also in need of rain to prevent declines in yield potential.
