OMAHA (DTN) -- Favorable conditions for the developing Midwest corn and soy crops, a tropical disturbance carrying heavy rains this week for Louisiana and the Delta region, and limited rains for the Northern Plains are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

FAVORABLE MIDWEST CONDITIONS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for episodes of scattered rains and no hot weather to favor developing corn and soybeans in the Midwest.

TROPICAL DISTURBANCE AIMS FOR LOUISIANA

At 4 a.m. CDT, a tropical disturbance with 40 mile-per-hour winds was located about 305 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The system is moving towards the northwest at 8 mph. The forecast suggests a possible landfall in western Louisiana Wednesday night. Top winds at the time of landfall are forecasted at about 45 mph. The weakening low winds would then carry north into the Delta region before turning northeast. The main impact would be heavy rains leading to flooding with this system.

NORTHERN PLAINS

More rain would benefit developing corn and soybeans and heading spring wheat in the Northern Plains. Rainfall is expected to be limited during the next seven days. However, the lack of any hot weather will limit crop stress.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

The Southern Plains will see mostly favorable conditions for mature winter wheat and the harvest. Episodes of hot weather will stress corn and sorghum at times, but cooler intervals eases stress at times.

LIMITED RAIN FOR WEST TEXAS

Cotton planting is ongoing in West Texas. More rain would benefit dryland fields. Rainfall chances are fairly limited during the next five days but may increase somewhat later in the seven-day period. Very hot weather is expected into Friday, then it will be cooler during the weekend.

IMPROVED CONDITIONS IN CANADIAN PRAIRIES

Rainfall that has occurred in the Canadian Prairies during the past week has improved conditions for developing crops in central and east areas following the prior extended drier spell. Cooler weather may slow development somewhat.

SHOWERS HELP NORTHEAST CHINA

Showers and cooler weather developed during the weekend period and continued during Monday in northeast China. This will improve conditions for planting and early development of crops. However, more rain is still needed through some western growing areas.

INDIAN MONSOON DELAYED

The leading edge of the Monsoon has moved little during the past seven days, and it is now running about 10 days behind normal development in India. This leaves key growing areas of west-central and northwest India outside of the Monsoon flow pattern. The activity in the Arabian Sea has diminished considerably during the past week. This limits the potential for showers in key soybean, groundnut and cotton areas. Planting progress may slow due to likely hotter weather and limited showers.
