OMAHA (DTN) -- Rainfall offering only limited relief from drought in the Northern Plains, and a variable rainfall prospect in the Midwest, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

MIXED MIDWEST RAIN FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for variable rainfall across the Midwest during the balance of the week. Moderate to heavy totals are indicated for the eastern Midwest, with light-to-moderate amounts in the western Midwest. Rainfall will help improve conditions for developing corn and soybeans; however, stress to replanted crops, with minimal root structure, is likely.

HOT SOUTHERN PLAINS TREND

In the Southern Plains, a dry and hot pattern is set to continue through the end of the week. This favors winter wheat harvest, but will be stressful for row crops. Irrigation needs will be extensive. The heat will also stress livestock in feedlots.

NORTHERN PLAINS STORMS

In the Northern Plains, moderate to heavy rain is expected to cover most of the region between what occurred Monday night through Tuesday morning along with the remainder of Tuesday through Tuesday night. Rainfall will help ease concerns in key spring wheat and corn areas. However, spring wheat is likely to have notable reduced production, with crop ratings at the lowest value since the 1988 drought year.

SHOWERS IN PRAIRIES

Rain is expected through most of the Canadian Prairies through Wednesday. Rain is needed in the area from south and east Saskatchewan through Manitoba due to below- or well-below-normal rainfall levels during the past 60 days. Rain may still be considered unfavorable in central and north Alberta and northwest Saskatchewan as it delays fieldwork and promotes wet conditions leading to disease risk.

LIMITED UKRAINE RAINFALL

Ukraine and Russia crop areas have only light rain indicated for this week. Dryness easing in north-central Ukraine will be minimal.

IMPROVING NORTHEAST CHINA SHOWER CHANCE

Scattered rain showers are indicated for northeast China over the next week. The scattered rain pattern favors ongoing planning, but more moisture is needed for crop development, notably in the west. Rain chance are increasing for the end of the week.
