Variable Midwest Temperatures

OMAHA (DTN)-- Increased shower and thunderstorm chances in the Midwest, and favorable Southern Plains winter wheat harvest conditions, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

STORMY WEEK FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a mix of thunderstorms and heat in the Midwest this week. Rainfall prospects are higher than indicated at the end of last week. Rainfall, along with favorable soil moisture, will be beneficial for crop progress and development.

HEAT FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS HARVEST

In the Southern Plains, a dry and hot pattern favors winter wheat ripening and harvest. Early harvest results in southern Kansas indicate yields that are above average, but less than a year ago. Scattered showers and thunderstorms this week over eastern areas will cause some harvest disruptions. Very warm to hot temperatures this week will be stressful to developing row crops.

PROMISING NORTHERN PLAINS SHOWER FORECAST

There is a good chance for significant rains to occur in the key growing areas of the Northern Plains this week. Rainfall will help ease stress to developing and early reproductive crops after recent heat and dryness.

POSSIBLE SOUTHERN PRAIRIES RAIN

In the Canadian Prairies, a wet pattern over the past weekend may again slow seasonal fieldwork. Showers elsewhere in the region would be favorable following an extended drier period. The outlook continues to point towards a good chance for needed rains to occur in the drier areas of Saskatchewan and southeast Alberta early this week.

LIMITED UKRAINE RAINFALL

Ukraine and Russia crop areas have only light rain indicated for this week. Dryness easing in north-central Ukraine will be minimal.

LIGHT NORTHEAST CHINA SHOWERS

Scattered rain showers are indicated for northeast China over the next week. The scattered rain pattern favors ongoing planning, but more moisture is needed for crop development, notably in the west.

WEEKEND CENTRAL CHINA RAIN

In central China, moderate to very heavy rain occurred through the southern areas of the North China Plain and the Yangtze River valley during the weekend. This development may be the leading edge of the seasonal rainy season for central China. Rain is unfavorable for mature winter crops and harvesting as well as for planting spring and summer crops. However, the rain is needed to improve irrigation and soil moisture for summer crops.

EARLY INDIA MONSOON SHOWERS

The leading edge of the India monsoon has moved to just north of Mumbai on the west coast and to western Bangladesh and southern West Bengal in northeast areas. This is about average for this date. Seasonal rains will improve conditions for planting and early development through south, central and northeast India and Bangladesh. Local flooding is likely with a good monsoon in the region.
