Corn, Spring Wheat Conditions Decline; First Soy Condition Rating of Year Lowest in Four Years

OMAHA (DTN) -- Corn and spring wheat conditions dropped from the previous week, and USDA's first soybean condition rating of the year was below last year's rating at the same time, according to USDA's weekly Crop Progress report released Monday.

This week's report showed 94% of U.S. corn was emerged, down from 95% a year ago and even with the five-year average of 94%.

Sixty-seven of the corn crop was rated in good-to-excellent to excellent condition, down from 68% the previous week. This resulted in a DTN Corn Condition Index of 159, down 6 points from the previous week. The index is down from 181 a year ago and the lowest in four years. "Monday's report is slightly bullish for corn," said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman.

USDA said 92% of U.S. soybeans were planted as of Sunday, June 11, up from 91% a year ago and above the five-year average of 87%. Seventy-seven percent of soybeans were emerged, even with a year ago and up from the five-year average of 73%.

In its first soybean condition rating of the year, USDA estimated that 66% of the soybean crop was rated in good-to-excellent condition, resulting in a DTN Soybean Condition Index of 162. The index is down from 177 a year ago and is also the lowest in four years. "Monday's report is slightly bullish for soybeans," Hultman said.

Meanwhile, USDA reported that 92% of winter wheat is headed, down from 95% a year ago and up from the five-year average of 91% headed. Seventeen of winter wheat has been harvested, up from 10% a year ago and above the five-year average of 15%.

Fifty percent of the winter wheat crop was rated in good-to-excellent condition, resulting in a DTN Winter Wheat Condition Index of 121, down 1 point from a week ago. DTN's index is down from 153 a year ago, but above the four-year average of 77. "Monday's new-crop rating is neutral for winter wheat," Hultman said.

USDA estimated that 95% of spring wheat was emerged as of Sunday, down from 99% a year ago, but up from the five-year average of 92%. Forty-five percent of spring wheat was rated good-to-excellent, down 10 percentage points from the previous week's rating of 55%. This resulted in a DTN Spring Wheat Condition Index of 105, down 32 points from a week ago. The index is down from 187 a year ago and is also the lowest in over two decades. "Monday's report is bullish for spring wheat," Hultman said.

In other crop reports, cotton was 92% planted, slightly ahead of the five-year average of 90%. Cotton squaring was 15% compared to the average of 12%. Rice was 94% emerged, compared to 97% on average.

Sorghum was 71% planted, behind the five-year average of 73%. Barley was 91% emerged, compared to 93% on average. Oats were 44% headed, compared to 48% on average.

Colorado

Isolated precipitation along with very warm weather accelerated crop development in many counties across the state. Strong thunderstorms with heavy precipitation and hail were reported in some northeastern counties. Isolated crop damage was reported in these localities. There were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork, up from the previous week's 5.5 days. Topsoil moisture was 1% very poor, 8% poor, 80% adequate and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture was 1% very poor, 7% poor, 89% adequate and 3% surplus. Barley emerged was 91% with 99% the five-year average. Barley headed was 6% with 10% the five-year average. Barley crop condition was 18% fair and 82% good to excellent. Corn planted was 96% with 100% the five-year average. Corn emerged was 89% with 91% the five-year average. Corn crop condition was 1% poor, 6% fair and 93% good to excellent. Sorghum planted was 47% with 60% the five-year average. Sorghum emerged was 83% and 96% the five-year average. Sorghum crop condition was 1% poor, 21% fair and 78% good to excellent. Spring wheat planted was 92% and 99% the five-year average. Spring wheat emerged was 83% and 96% the five-year average. Spring wheat headed was 7% with 16% the five-year average. Winter wheat headed was 96% with the five-year average 89%. Winter wheat turning color was 17% with 34% the five-year average. Winter wheat crop condition was 20% very poor to poor, 32% fair and 48% good to excellent.

Illinois

Warm weather and limited rain assisted farmers in the early wheat harvest. There were 6.9 days suitable for fieldwork last week. Statewide, the average temperature was 70.9 degrees, 0.9 degree above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.15 inch, 0.76 inch below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 3% very short, 38% short, 56% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 1% very short, 18% short, 77% adequate and 4% surplus. Corn emerged was at 96%, compared with 97% for the five-year average. Corn condition was rated at 3% very poor, 11% poor, 28% fair, 50% good and 8% excellent. Soybean planting was 93% complete, compared with the five-year average of 88%. Soybeans emerged was at 78%. Soybean condition was rated 2% very poor, 9% poor, 23% fair, 57% good and 9% excellent. Winter wheat harvest was 24% complete, compared to the five-year average of 11%. Winter wheat condition was rated 8% very poor, 7% poor, 21% fair, 47% good and 17% excellent.

Indiana

Drier conditions led to a busy week for farmers. Growers were able to wrap up planting, and apply fertilizer and weed control. However, some working under the driest conditions postponed those activities to wait for needed rain. The statewide average temperature was 69.0 degrees, 0.3 degree below normal. Statewide precipitation was 0.12 inch, below average by 0.90 inch. There were 6.7 days available for fieldwork last week. Topsoil moisture was 8% very short, 29% short, 58% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture was 3% very short, 19% short, 70% adequate and 8% surplus. Corn planted was 98% with 99% the five-year average. Corn emerged was 86% with 94% the five-year average. Corn crop condition was 20% very poor to poor, 37% fair and 44% good to excellent. Soybeans planted was 90% with 92% the five-year average. Soybeans emerged was 86% with 94% the five-year average. Soybeans crop condition was 12% very poor to poor, 37% fair and 51% good to excellent. Winter wheat headed was 99% with 96% the five-year average. Winter wheat matured was 46%. Winter wheat harvested was 9% with 6% the five-year average. Winter wheat crop condition was 7% very poor to poor, 28% fair and 65% good to excellent.

Iowa

Dry and hot conditions helped crop development and fieldwork progress last week. Statewide, there were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork, the highest number of days suitable so far this year. However, Iowa could use rain in the next week, as some crops are showing signs of stress due to the dry conditions. Activities for the week included cutting and baling hay, spraying herbicides and side-dressing corn with nitrogen, and planting and re-planting. Topsoil moisture levels rated 7% very short, 33% short, 59% adequate and 1% surplus. Southeastern Iowa reported the lowest levels of topsoil moisture with 56% rated short to very short. Subsoil moisture levels rated 2% very short, 16% short, 79% adequate and 3% surplus. Ninety-six percent of Iowa's corn crop has emerged, one week behind last year. Seventy-seven percent of the corn crop was rated in good to excellent condition. Soybean planting reached 98% complete, over two weeks ahead of the five-year average. Soybean emergence reached 85%, two days behind last year but four days ahead of average. Soybean condition rated 73% good to excellent. Oats headed reached 44% this week, five days behind last year and two days behind average. Oat condition rated 77% good to excellent.

Kansas

Temperatures averaged 2 to 4 degrees above normal across most of the state. Up to one inch of rain was reported in many areas of western Kansas, with some localized amounts near 2 inches. Winter wheat harvest has begun in some southeastern counties. There were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 9% short, 84% adequate and 7% surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 5% short, 90% adequate and 5% surplus. Winter wheat condition rated 9% very poor, 15% poor, 31% fair, 39% good and 6% excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 85%, near 89% last year, but ahead of 74% for the five-year average. Mature was 33% percent. Harvested was 4%, equal to last year, but behind 13%. Corn condition rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 28% fair, 57% good and 8% excellent. Corn planted was 97%, near 100% last year and 99% average. Emerged was 88%, behind 95% last year and 94% average. Silking was 1%, equal to both last year and average. Soybean condition rated 2% poor, 38% fair, 57% good and 3% excellent. Soybeans planted was 80%, ahead of 70% last year and 72% average. Emerged was 60%, well ahead of 38% last year, and ahead of 52% average. Sorghum condition rated 1% poor, 30% fair, 68% good and 1% excellent. Sorghum planted was 52%, behind 59% last year and 60% average. Emerged was 18%. Cotton condition rated 11% fair, 88% good and 1% excellent. Cotton planted was 81%, well ahead of 53% last year, and ahead of 73% average.

Michigan

There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork last week. High winds coupled with warm temperatures dried soils and allowed many producers to catch up on planting, spraying and fertilizing, although high winds made spraying difficult at times. The lack of moisture was beginning to stress crops in some areas and many areas were reportedly in need of a good soaking rain by week's end. Days suitable for fieldwork was 6.6 days this week, up from last week's 5.5 days. Topsoil moisture was 10% very short, 39% short, 47% adequate and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture was 4% very short, 21% short, 67% adequate and 8% surplus. Corn planted was 96% with 99% the five-year average. Corn emerged was 83% with 93% the five-year average. Corn crop condition was 4% very poor to poor, 27% fair and 69% good to excellent. Soybeans planted was 88% with 95% the five-year average. Soybeans emerged was 68% with 80% the five-year average. Soybeans crop condition was 4% very poor to poor, 26% fair and 70% good to excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 94%. Winter wheat headed was 77% with 88% the five-year average. Winter wheat was 11% very poor to poor, 22% fair and 67% good to excellent. Oats planted was 90% with 99% the five-year average. Oats emerged was 81% with 94% the five-year average. Oats headed was 12% with 24% the five-year average. Oats crop condition was 2% very poor to poor, 25% fair and 73% good to excellent.

Minnesota

Minnesota farmers took advantage of the 6.1 days suitable for field work to nearly complete planting last week. Continued warm and dry conditions advanced crop development statewide. Crop reporters suggest that rain is needed to benefit crops planted on lighter soils. Field activities for the week included planting, spraying herbicides, and cutting hay. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% very short, 17% short, 78% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 6% short, 87% adequate and 6% surplus. Nearly all of Minnesota's corn has emerged. Corn condition improved slightly to 78% good to excellent. Soybean planting was 99% complete. Soybean emergence, at 87% statewide, remained ahead of the 5-year average. Soybean condition improved to 78% good to excellent. Spring wheat was 39% jointed or beyond, nine days behind average. There were scattered reports of spring wheat heading. Spring wheat condition rated 93% good to excellent. Seventy-two percent of the oats were at or beyond the jointing stage, with 11% headed or beyond. Oats condition was 81% good to excellent. The barley crop was 7% headed, two days behind last year and one day behind average. Barley condition rated 89% good to excellent. Sixty-eight percent of the dry edible bean crop had emerged. Sunflower planting was at 97% completed. Potato condition was rated 88% good to excellent.

Missouri

Dry weather allowed fieldwork to progress last week. Temperatures averaged 70.6 degrees, 0.3 degree below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.27 inch statewide, 0.83 inch below normal. There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Statewide, topsoil moisture supply was rated 6% very short, 24% short, 67% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 3% very short, 17% short, 75% adequate and 5% surplus. Corn emerged progressed to 98%. Corn condition was rated 59% good to excellent. Soybean planting was 85% complete, compared to 70% for the five-year average, and soybeans emerged progressed to 65%. Soybean condition was rated 61% good to excellent. Cotton condition was rated 47% good to excellent. Rice emerged progressed to 94%. Rice condition was rated 64% good to excellent. Sorghum planting was 80% complete. Winter wheat harvest was 21% complete, compared with the five-year average of 18%. Winter wheat condition was rated 68 good to excellent.

Nebraska

Temperatures averaged 4 to 8 degrees above normal and were accompanied by dry conditions last week. Only the southern tip of the panhandle and a few central counties received significant rain. Producers were irrigating due to the dry conditions. The warm, dry weather allowed planting and other field work to continue. There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 3% very short, 37% short, 59% adequate and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% very short, 19% short, 78% adequate and 1% surplus. Corn emerged was 98%, near 97% for the five-year average. Corn condition was rated 78% good to excellent. Soybeans planted was 97%, near 96% average, and emerged was 86%, near 84% average. Soybeans condition was rated 74% good to excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 30%, near 31% average. Winter wheat condition was rated 51% good to excellent. Sorghum planted was 90%, near 89% average, and emerged was 70%, ahead of 57% average. Sorghum condition was rated 72% good to excellent. Oats jointed was 98%, ahead of 85% last year, and headed was 76%, well ahead of 50% average. Oats condition was rated 72% good to excellent.

North Dakota

Dry conditions persisted over much of the state last week. The western half of North Dakota received little to no rain while parts of the east received up to an inch. However, many areas receiving rain were still short and need additional moisture soon to help crop development. Temperatures for the week averaged 2 to 8 degrees above normal. There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 29% very short, 34% short, 34% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 15% very short, 31% short, 51% adequate and 3% surplus. Corn emerged was 94%, ahead of 86% for the five-year average. Corn condition was rated 58% good to excellent. Soybeans planted was 98%, ahead of 91% average, and emerged was 84%, ahead of 68% average. Soybean condition was rated 56% good to excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 93% and headed was 40%, near 41% last year. Winter wheat condition was rated 41% good to excellent. Spring wheat emerged was 98%, jointed was 47%, and headed was 3%, equal to average. Spring wheat condition was rated 43% good to excellent. Barley emerged was 94% and jointed was 41%. Oats emerged was 94%, jointed was 44% and headed was 8%. Durum wheat emerged was 97% and jointed was 45%, well ahead of 24% average jointed. Durum wheat condition was rated 20% good to excellent. Canola emerged was 94%, ahead of 80% average. Canola condition was rated 41% good to excellent.

Ohio

Precipitation levels ranged from zero to moderate across the state last week. Most rain fell in west-central, central and east-central Ohio. Temperatures were cooler than normal, especially in the southern part of the state. There were also some isolated reports of severe weather and hail damage in the south. There were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Statewide, topsoil moisture was rated 1% very short, 16% short, 78% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 1% very short, 5% short, 83% adequate and 11% surplus. Corn was 96% planted as of Sunday, behind the average of 99%, and 88% of corn was emerged, also behind the average of 93%. Corn condition was rated 50% good to excellent. Soybeans were 90% planted, behind the average of 94%, and 71% of soybeans were emerged, behind the average of 80%. Soybean conditions were rated 57% good to excellent. Winter wheat was 99% headed and 18% mature. Oats were 33% headed, behind the average of 39%.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma experienced mostly mild and dry weather last week with statewide temperatures averaging approximately 75 degrees. According to the OCS Mesonet, rainfall deficits were becoming more apparent, though the majority of the state remained drought free with exception of the south-central and southeast districts. Drought condition was rated 6% abnormally dry, up three points from the previous week. Statewide, topsoil moisture was rated 1% very short, 20% short, 75% adequate and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 1% very short, 13% short, 85% adequate and 1% surplus. Corn emerged reached 94%, up 2 points from normal. Corn silk reached 7%. Corn condition was rated 87% good to excellent. Sorghum planted reached 67%, up 3 points from normal. Soybeans seeded reached 60 percent, unchanged from normal, and emerged reached 28%, down 16 points from normal. Cotton planted reached 86%, up 15 points from normal, and cotton squaring reached 8%, up 4 points from normal. Winter wheat harvested reached 52%, up 13 points from normal. Canola harvested reached 65%, up 11 points from normal. Oats jointing reached 93%, unchanged from normal, and headed reached 87%, up 5 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Oats harvested reached 15%.

South Dakota

Portions of South Dakota received much-needed precipitation late in the week. A line of severe thunderstorms affected parts of central and east-central South Dakota early Sunday. Rainfall amounts varied from one-half to 2 inches. Strong winds and hail were also reported. Temperatures were well above average for the reporting period. Highs in excess of 90 degrees and strong winds continued to exacerbate drought conditions in many areas of the State. There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 32% very short, 31% short, 36% adequate and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 23% very short, 35% short, 41% adequate and 1% surplus. Winter wheat headed was 94%, well ahead of 63 for the five-year average. Winter wheat condition was rated 21% good to excellent. Spring wheat jointing was 72%, behind 80% last year, and headed was 37%, ahead of 24% average. Spring wheat condition was rated 13% good to excellent. Oats jointed was 80%, headed was 41% and coloring was 5%. Barley jointed was 68%, near 66% last year, and headed was 25%. Corn emerged was 98%, ahead of 94% average. Corn condition was rated 45% good to excellent. Soybeans planted was 99%, ahead of 93% average, and emerged was 89%, ahead of 76% average. Soybean condition was rated 43% good to excellent. Sorghum planted was 87%, ahead of 76% average, and emerged was 48%, ahead of 39% average. Sorghum condition was rated 14% good to excellent.

Texas

Scattered and highly varied amounts of precipitation fell across the state last week. The Coastal Bend, Upper Coast, southeast Texas, the Cross Timbers and the Low Plains received from 0.5 inch to 2 inches of rainfall, with isolated areas reporting up to 5 inches of rain. However, the High Plains, central Texas, Edwards Plateau, the Trans-Pecos and south Texas received little to no rainfall during the week. With 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork, many operations were able to make a lot of progress planting and harvesting crops. Statewide, topsoil moisture was rated 7% very short, 28% short, 60% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 7% very short, 25% short, 64% adequate and 4% surplus. Corn was 96% emerged and 52% silked, ahead of the average pace of 46% silked. Corn condition was rated 76% good to excellent. Cotton was 89% planted, 14% squaring and 3% setting bolls. Rice was 1% headed, ahead of the average pace of 4%. Sorghum was 95% planted, 49% headed and 25% coloring, ahead of the average of 19% coloring. Soybeans were 96% planted, 86% emerged and 20% blooming, ahead of the average pace of 14% blooming. Soybean conditions were rated 68% good to excellent. Winter wheat was 72% harvested, well ahead of the average pace of 38%.

Wisconsin

Hot, sunny and windy weather this week helped farmers make rapid progress toward completing spring fieldwork. Reporters in northwest Wisconsin noted heavy rains over the weekend, while other areas saw little to no precipitation. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% very short, 14% short, 68% adequate and 16% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 6% short, 76% adequate and 18% surplus. Corn planting was 96% complete, one day ahead of the five-year average. Corn emerged was at 84%, two days behind the average. Corn condition was rated 70% good to excellent. Eighty-nine percent of the state's expected soybean acres have been planted, one day ahead of the average. Sixty-three percent of the state's soybeans have emerged, one day behind the average. Oats emerged was at 96% complete, 1 day ahead of the average, and oats headed was reported at 7%, five days behind the average. Oats condition was 78% good to excellent, 3 percentage points above last week. Winter wheat was 64% headed, 5 days behind last year. Winter wheat was 76% in good-to-excellent condition statewide, 5 percentage points higher than last week.
