Drier Trend for Midwest
OMAHA (DTN) -- Lighter rain across the Midwest through the weekend, and a developing dry pattern in the Northern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.
LIGHT MIDWEST PRECIPITATION
The DTN ag weather forecast calls for light precipitation across the Midwest over the next week. This will offer some improvement in field conditions for late planting and crop development. Progress and crop conditions are especially behind and below average in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Variable temperatures will hinder the accumulation of growing degree days for crops.
PERSISTENT SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN
Across the Southern Plains, periods of cool and wet conditions are unfavorable for maturing winter wheat. Increasing disease issues along with deteriorating crop quality and lower protein can be expected. A mostly favorable weather pattern is in effect for development of corn and sorghum; however, planting delays continue in some sections.
DRYNESS IN NORTHERN PLAINS
P[L1] D[0x0] M[300x250] OOP[F] ADUNIT[] T[]
In the Northern Plains, warm conditions will favor development of row crops and spring wheat. However, dry conditions across the region are becoming a concern. Montana recorded its driest spring (March-to-May) since 2001. The latest Drought Monitor also has all of North Dakota with either abnormally-dry or moderate drought indicated, along with the northern half of South Dakota and eastern Montana.
RAIN AHEAD FOR PRAIRIES
The Canadian Prairies will see several periods of rain during the next five days. The rain will favor developing crops through central and east areas while causing some delay to seasonal fieldwork in the west.
BENEFICIAL EUROPE SHOWERS
In Western Europe, a variable temperature pattern with episodes of scattered rainfall will favor developing winter wheat and rapeseed and early growth of corn and sunflower for both France and Germany.
FAVORABLE RUSSIA PATTERN
Russia and Ukraine have variable temperatures with episodes of showers in the forecast through the weekend. This combination will generally favor winter and spring grains and oilseeds.
SCATTERED NORTHEAST CHINA RAIN
In northeast China, a cooler pattern with somewhat more shower activity is indicated for the end of this week and early next week.
FAVORABLE INDIA MONSOON SHOWERS
Across India, scattered pre-monsoon showers in the north and increasing monsoon rain in the east and southwest will begin to improve conditions for planting and early growth of Kharif (summer) crops.
