Continued Wet in Eastern Midwest

OMAHA (DTN) -- More very wet conditions in the eastern Midwest and ongoing field work slowdowns in the Canadian Prairies are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

MORE HEAVY EASTERN MIDWEST RAIN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for continued wet conditions to stymie eastern Midwest crop activity and development. Another round of heavy 2- to 4-inch rain (50-200 millimeters) occurred Wednesday in eastern Indiana and western Ohio. This adds to wet-weather stress after prior heavy rains. Cool conditions are also indicated, which will slow germination and early development.

SOUTHERN PLAINS SHOWERS

In the Southern Plains, showers through the weekend will maintain adequate to surplus soil moisture for reproductive to filling wheat, but may be unfavorable for maturing wheat and could promote more disease pressure. Delays to row-crop planting may occur at times. However, the pattern is mostly favorable for row-crop development.

GENERALLY FAVORABLE IN NORTHERN PLAINS

Northern Plains crop areas have no significant delays to the final planting effort expected. Cooler temperatures will slow germination and early development of recently planted crops through eastern areas, while in the west, warmer conditions will favor development.

WEEKEND DELTA RAIN

In the Delta, a new round of moderate to locally heavy rain is indicated through the upcoming holiday weekend. The rain will bring a new round of wet conditions to the region. A recent drier pattern has allowed for some clean-up activity following heavy rain and flooding.

SHOWERS DELAY CANADIAN PRAIRIES PROGRESS

In the Canadian Prairies, rain from Wednesday and continuing Thursday through Alberta and west and north Saskatchewan is expected to cause delays to seasonal fieldwork. This includes harvesting of last season's crops and planting this year's crops. Showers elsewhere in the region will favor development of recently planted crops while causing only minor planting delays. A warmer pattern during the upcoming weekend will favor germination and development.

WARMER FOR EUROPE

Much warmer conditions are indicated for western Europe through the weekend. This trend should be favorable after recent rainfall. The heat is expected to move into southeastern Europe during the seven-day time frame, which offers a chance for a new round of showers in England, France and Germany.

MIXED RUSSIA TREND

In Russia and Ukraine, variable temperatures with episodes of scattered showers will favor winter and spring grains and oilseeds. However, north-central Ukraine remains in need of rain. This portion of Ukraine has had only 50% to 70% of normal precipitation over the past three months.

INDIA MONSOON PROGRESS

There are signs that the India monsoon front may be getting closer to arrival on the subcontinent. During the past 24 hours, heavy rain showers have developed in Sri Lanka, suggesting that the monsoon front is getting ready to move. Normal onset date is around this time for Sri Lanka and through Tamil Nadu India by June 1.
