Wet and Cool in Midwest
OMAHA (DTN) -- Sub-par crop conditions due to chilly temperatures and heavy rain in the Midwest, and rain-related issues in the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.
RAINY AND COLD IN MIDWEST
The DTN ag weather forecast calls for disruptive conditions for planting and crop growth in the Midwest due to heavy rain and much-below-normal temperatures. This pattern remains in effect through the next seven days. Variable precipitation is indicated in the 10-day time frame, but temperatures will remain cold for the season, hindering crop development.
MORE SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN
In the Southern Plains, heavy rainfall during this week maintains adequate to surplus soil moisture; however, the rain may hinder the recovery of winter wheat following cold and snow in late April. High winds and hail will likely cause some damage to emerged summer crops and reproductive winter wheat as well.
NORTHERN PLAINS WEEKEND COLD

Across the Northern Plains, colder temperatures and frost will slow germination and early growth of recently planting crops. Drier conditions continue to favor planting progress. A warming trend during next week will be more favorable.
DRY AND WARMER FOR PRAIRIES
Across the Canadian Prairies, a warming trend with less rainfall will improve conditions for the harvest of last season's crop and planting of this year's crops. Soil moisture is mostly adequate to surplus for early needs of crops. However, dryness is starting to be noted in some local areas of southern Saskatchewan.
CENTRAL BRAZIL RAIN
Moderate to heavy rain is forecast for south-central Brazil states of Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul through Saturday. This will maintain favorable soil moisture for filling corn. Farther north, Mato Grosso and Goias will have light-to-moderate showers, continuing with a favorable pattern for the winter corn crop.
COOL ARGENTINA WEEKEND
Southern Argentina crop areas of La Pampa through southern and central Buenos Aires have rain and colder temperatures through the weekend. This will slow the pace of row-crop harvest and winter wheat planting, but it will maintain adequate to surplus soil moisture for winter wheat.
VARIABLE WESTERN EUROPE TEMPERATURES
Western Europe has a variable temperature pattern expected during the next seven to 10 days. There will be some cool periods; however, the forecast does not call for threatening cold. This should favor development of winter and spring crops. The forecast also features some rain which may, at times, delay seasonal field work.
DRY AND HOT IN CHINA
In northeastern China (former Manchuria), above- to much-above-normal temperatures are forecast through Saturday. These conditions favor corn and soybean planting. However, some sectors of the region are quite dry and will need rain soon to provide adequate crop moisture. The eastern sector has had rain recently and have better soil moisture at this time.
