Heavy Western Midwest Rain

OMAHA (DTN) -- Heavy rain targeting the western Midwest, and a developing dry trend in China, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

WET MIDWEST TREND

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for heavy rains in the western Midwest to delay and disrupt planting during much of the next five to seven days. A more favorable pattern for planting is in effect in the eastern Midwest, especially during the next two days.

CONTINUED SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN

In the Southern Plains, winter wheat is continuing to recover from the effects of cold and snow back in April. However, heavy rainfall during this week will threaten additional stress in wheat. There is also a threat of damage from severe storms.

NORTHERN PLAINS FROST CHANCE

Across the Northern Plains, colder weather and frost will slow germination and early growth of recently-planted crops. Drier conditions remain favorable for planting progress.

COOL BUT DRY FOR PRAIRIES

Canadian Prairies' crop areas will have scattered light precipitation at times and lower temperatures for a few more days. This trend will likely delay further harvest of last season's crop along with hindering planting for the 2017 crops. However, many areas will be dry enough to allow for continued fieldwork.

ADDITIONAL BRAZIL SHOWERS

South-central Brazil states of Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul are in line for showers and thunderstorms over the next few days. The rain will maintain favorable soil moisture for filling corn.

SOUTHERN ARGENTINA SHOWERS

Southern Argentina crop areas have rain and lower temperatures forecast by the end of this week, especially over La Pampa through southern and central Buenos Aires. This will slow the pace of row crop harvest and winter wheat planting, but it will maintain adequate to surplus soil moisture for winter wheat.

FAVORABLE WESTERN EUROPE TREND

Winter and spring crops in Western Europe will benefit from a recent warmer period along with scattered rains.

IMPROVEMENT IN UKRAINE

Recent rainfall has improved conditions for winter and spring grains in previously dry areas of north-central Ukraine. Elsewhere, showers and cooler weather may slow seasonal fieldwork, but spring-planted and winter crops are doing well.

DRY AND HOT IN CHINA

In northeastern China, a very hot pattern is in effect through the end of the week. The heat will deplete much of the moisture put down by last weekend's rain. The hotter trend bears watching for possible season-long impact on corn and soybean production.
