Drier Weekend for Midwest

OMAHA (DTN) -- A round of drier conditions for the Midwest through the weekend, and rain chances redeveloping during next week, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

DRY MIDWEST WEEKEND

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for warmer and drier conditions across the Midwest through the weekend. This will offer some opportunities for planting progress and crop development. Rain returns to the western areas early next week, while eastern areas will see rain redeveloping during the May 17-to-May 18 period.

BENEFICIAL TREND IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, showers and a variable temperature pattern favor development of winter wheat in the region.

FAVORABLE NORTHERN PLAINS PATTERN

Northern Plains' conditions remain favorable at this time, with a dry and warm trend through the weekend. During next week, showers will increase, likely slowing spring fieldwork again while maintaining favorable soil moisture.

NEW SHOWERS IN PRAIRIES

Across the Canadian Prairies, wet conditions in the western sector through the weekend will again slow fieldwork, including harvesting of 2016 crops and fieldwork in preparation for planting 2017 crops. After that, the rain shifts into the east and south areas while the west is drier but fairly cool several days before it begins to warm again.

FAVORABLE BRAZIL CONDITIONS

Drier and warmer conditions in Brazil will favor development of second-crop corn (safrinha) in Mato Grosso do Sul and Parana, following recent showers and earlier cold conditions. Rain chances increase again for next week.

ARGENTINA SHOWERS

In Argentina, showers Friday may mean delays to the harvest of summer crops and planting of winter wheat, following the harvest. Soil moisture will favor development of winter wheat.

VARIABLE EUROPE TEMPERATURES

Reports suggest that a late April cold snap over Western Europe may have caught some rapeseed in the flowering stage and wheat in the heading stage in north and northeast France. If verified this likely means a reduction of yield potential for these crops. The area expects to turn very warm during the weekend and early next week, but may see additional cool weather threats down the road.

COLDER FOR UKRAINE

Ukraine and Russia have colder conditions ahead through the weekend. This will likely slow germination and early development of recently planted spring grains, and possibly burn back any emerged crops in some sections. Dry conditions remain in effect in north-central Ukraine.

FAVORABLE CHINA CONDITIONS

China's major crop areas have mostly favorable conditions for planting and early development of summer crops over key northeast China growing areas.
