Contrast In Midwest Conditions

OMAHA (DTN)-- A notable contrast in conditions across the Midwest, and warmer temperatures ahead for the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

MIXED MIDWEST PATTERN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for heavy rain in the southern and eastern Midwest through Friday. This will lead to further delays in spring planting along with flood concerns. Western areas will be drier and warmer, with better conditions for planting progress.

SEASONAL SOUTHERN PLAINS FORECAST

In the Southern Plains, a turn to more seasonal temperatures and less heavy rain is likely to favor winter wheat after recent cold temperatures and heavy precipitation. Scattered rains during the 6-10-day period may again slow planting progress for spring-planted crops.

RAIN EASES IN DELTA

In the Delta, recent heavy rains and cool conditions have been stressful to early crop growth along with winter wheat. Flooding is also an issue. The forecast is more favorable, with a drier trend through the weekend. This will allow for improvement in crop conditions along with some easing of flooding.

WARMER FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, drier and warmer weather during this week is promising. This should help improve conditions for planting, especially in the west.

DRIER IN CANADIAN PRAIRIES

In the Canadian Prairies, drier and warmer weather is expected during the next five to seven days, possibly longer. This should help improve conditions for spring field work, including harvesting for last season's crop still in the fields in the northwest areas.

SOUTH-CENTRAL BRAZIL RAIN

In Brazil, recent rainfall will favor development of second-crop corn in Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul. Recent cool weather will slow development for a time. However, conditions should be warmer during the next five to seven days or longer.

ARGENTINA THUNDERSTORMS

Thunderstorms this weekend may lead to delays in harvesting but overall a more favorable weather pattern for mature crops, harvesting of corn and soybeans, planting and development of winter wheat is in effect in Argentina.

COLD EUROPE PATTERN

Reports suggest that a late-April cold snap over western Europe may have caught some rapeseed in the flowering stage and wheat in the heading stage in north and northeast France. If verified this likely means a reduction of yield potential for these crops. The weather pattern at this time is not as cold and a little more showery in nature, which may help some crops to recover.

DRYNESS IN NORTH UKRAINE

Dryness is still a concern for north-central Ukraine winter and spring planted crops. Elsewhere a favorable pattern for winter grains and for planting and development of spring grains, including corn.
