OMAHA (DTN) -- Damaging snow in Southern Plains wheat areas and extensive disruption to Midwest planting after heavy rain are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

RAIN DISRUPTS MIDWEST PLANTING

The DTN Ag Weather forecast calls for extensive disruption to planting in the Midwest following heavy to very heavy weekend rains along with severe weather. Southern and eastern areas may see more rain during the middle to late part of the week, further delaying planting.

DAMAGING KANSAS SNOW

Heavy snow in western Kansas during the weekend caused some extensive damage to winter wheat, breaking off stems of plants which were in the heading stage. Heavy rain in eastern portions also caused flooding and possible crop loss. Wet and cold conditions brings planting of summer crops to a standstill.

HEAVY DELTA RAIN FORECAST

In the Delta, heavy weekend rains, strong and damaging winds and hail are unfavorable for winter wheat and emerging corn. Planting delays for soybeans and cotton will be increasing.

IMPROVEMENT FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, a turn to drier and warmer conditions during this week is promising. This should help improve conditions for planting, especially in the west.

DRIER PRAIRIES FORECAST

Drier conditions and warmer temperatures should allow for some fieldwork progress in the Canadian Prairies this week. Northern areas remain stymied by wet ground and crops still standing in the field from the 2016 season.

CENTRAL BRAZIL SHOWERS

Across Brazil, recent rainfall will favor development of second crop corn in Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul.

MILD ARGENTINA FORECAST

Argentina continues with more favorable weather pattern for maturing summer crops and harvesting this week.

WARMER RUSSIA TREND

Ukraine and Russia crop areas had a turn to much warmer and mostly dry weather during the weekend and early this week. This should help improve conditions for winter wheat and early planted spring grains. It could also encourage additional spring planting in south and east Ukraine and South Russia, including corn planting.
