Southern Plains Freeze
OMAHA (DTN) -- Freezing temperatures in Southern Plains wheat, and a cold and wet pattern through the Midwest for most of the next week are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.
MIDWEST RAIN AND COLD
The DTN Ag Weather forecast calls for more cold and wet conditions in the Midwest. Episodes of heavy rain and a turn to colder temperatures will likely lead to delays for planting corn and soybeans during the next five to seven days. Longer-range charts have some promise of drier and warmer weather, but this is a somewhat uncertain outlook.
FREEZE HITS KANSAS WHEAT
Heading wheat in parts of central Kansas was hit with freezing temperatures Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Damage is likely. Additional cold temperature threats are in store for the Southern Plains wheat areas through the weekend into early next week.
HEAVY DELTA RAIN AHEAD
The Delta will see heavy rain and storms through the next several days. Fieldwork and soybean planting delays are likely.

LIMITED NORTHERN PLAINS PROGRESS
In the Northern Plains, cool and wet conditions will bring more delays to spring planting in North Dakota and Minnesota. Some western areas will have chances for progress due to a drier trend over the upcoming weekend.
STILL SLOW IN PRAIRIES
In the Canadian Prairies, southern areas have drier conditions, but continued cold soil temperatures to hinder fieldwork. Northern-area producers continue to be stranded on fieldwork due to recent rain and snow, along with unharvested crops from a year ago inhibiting progress.
DRIER BRAZIL PATTERN
Across Brazil, recent rainfall will favor development of second crop corn in south-central areas. Drier conditions are in store during the next week. This development may be an indicator of the end of the rainy season in Brazil and will bear close attention.
FAVORABLE ARGENTINA FORECAST
Argentina has a more favorable weather pattern for maturing summer crops and harvesting at this time. The region should be drier and much warmer at the end of this week and early next week.
MILDER RUSSIA PATTERN
Warmer and mostly dry conditions are indicated through at least the next week in Russia and Ukraine. This should help improve conditions for winter wheat and early planted spring grains. It could also encourage additional spring planting in south and east Ukraine and South Russia, including corn planting.
