OMAHA (DTN) -- A round of colder weather with moderate to heavy rain disrupting planting in the Midwest, and possible freeze damage to Southern Plains wheat, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

RAIN TO DISRUPT MIDWEST PLANTING

The DTN ag weather forecast highlights heavy rain across the Midwest during the next week. The rain, along with a colder weather pattern, will disrupt planting progress. The greatest lag in progress will be noted in the western and northern Midwest, north of Interstate 80.

CHILLY SOUTHERN PLAINS TREND

In the Southern Plains, showers moving through the region will continue to offer favorable soil moisture for winter wheat. Temperatures will be lower this week, with several occurrences at or near the freezing mark. This bears watching for possible damage to heading wheat. Heading progress in Kansas is at 25% this week. Some freeze damage may have already occurred from sub-freezing conditions over the past weekend.

HEAVY DELTA RAIN

Heavy rain continues in the forecast for the Delta. Fieldwork and planting delays will likely increase with the heavy rain. The heavy precipitation may also threaten winter wheat due to standing water.

WET AND COLD IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, the pattern continues to offer wet conditions and lower temperatures. This will keep the brakes on fieldwork and planting both for row crops and spring wheat.

COLD IN PRAIRIES

In the Canadian Prairies, a cold weather trend along with periodic light rain and snow during the next week will be unfavorable for fieldwork in most areas.

CONTINUED BRAZIL SHOWERS

Across Brazil, showers continue in the forecast for central crop areas through the rest of the week. This pattern brings additional moisture for the second-crop corn now in its pollination and fill stages.

LIGHT ARGENTINA PRECIPITATION

Argentina has an additional round of beneficial conditions for maturing summer crops and harvesting at this time. Light to moderate showers may impact Cordoba and Santa Fe through Wednesday, but an extended drier period is indicated following that shower occurrence.

MILD UKRAINE PATTERN

Ukraine and Russia wheat areas continue with a warmer forecast this week. This warmer pattern will generally favor winter grain development. Recent rain maintains mostly favorable soil moisture. The only notable dry area is in central Ukraine; however, the extent of dryness has been easing recently.
