OMAHA (DTN) -- Rain continuing in the Midwest forecast with resulting delays in planting, and uncertainty over the extent of flood damage in Argentina, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

RAIN STILL IN MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast continues to feature moderate to heavy rain and delays in spring field work and corn planting in the western and northern Midwest through the next seven days. The southeastern Midwest and Delta have lighter precipitation indicated, and a better opportunity for progress. Far northwestern areas will also have lighter rains and more favorable field work chances.

NEW SHOWERS FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

In the Southern Plains, additional light to moderate rain showers will improve and maintain soil moisture for winter wheat. Warm temperatures will promote more rapid development of the crop.

SCATTERED BRAZIL SHOWERS

Across Brazil, scattered showers remain in the central crop area forecast, which will be favorable for soil moisture for the winter corn crop (safrinha). Meanwhile, southern crop areas continue with a drier forecast through the end of the week. This will favor maturing crops and harvest after recent wet conditions.

SLOW ARGENTINA FLOOD RECOVERY

Argentina harvest remains stalled for the next week in many central crop areas following heavy rain and flooding during the first 10 days of April. Forecast details suggest a drier pattern, which will allow for slow recovery and receding of floodwaters. Damage and acreage loss details have yet to be finalized, but ideas of a ten-percent loss in acreage have been mentioned.

BENEFICIAL UKRAINE FORECAST

Episodes of scattered showers and variable temperatures continue in the Ukraine forecast through the next week. This combination will improve conditions for development of winter wheat. Crop development is running at least four weeks ahead of normal. Conditions also favor planting of spring grains in Ukraine and south Russia.
