Consistent South America Pattern
OMAHA (DTN) -- No change in the situation for crops in South America, and minimal precipitation for dry wheat areas of the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.
COLD MIDWEST WEEKEND
The DTN ag weather forecast continues to feature much colder weather across the Midwest through the weekend. This pattern may cause some stress to soft red winter wheat. Much warmer weather and more rain are indicated during the next five to seven days. There is also the potential for moderate to locally-heavy snow causing transportation issues in western areas.
LIMITED SOUTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE
In the Southern Plains, a round of snow and cold overnight Thursday likely caused some livestock stress in feedlot areas. However, there was not much moisture in this snow so it should not cause major problems for livestock or improve soil moisture for wheat significantly. Very warm weather is indicated early next week. There are no additional precipitation chances next week.

EXTREME NORTHERN PLAINS COLD
Extreme cold conditions are in store over the Northern Plains for a couple more days. The forecast calls for brief moderation later this weekend and early next week, followed by a new cold wave later next week. No significant snow is expected, but the system early next week needs to be watched.
FAVORABLE SOUTHERN BRAZIL RAIN
The Brazil weather trend remains consistent through the next week. Scattered showers and thundershowers for key south and central growing areas remain in the forecast during the next five to seven days. This maintains and improves soil moisture and favors developing corn and soybeans. Drier and warm conditions in northern crop areas favors early harvesting. The northeastern crop sector remains dry with only light precipitation indicated.
MIXED ARGENTINA TRENDS
In central Argentina, scattered rains and only brief hot spells will favor development of corn and soybeans. Some areas are under a threat of flooded-out acreage, however, due to recent very heavy rain. Dryness concerns for sunflower areas of the southwest due to below-normal December and early January rainfall and above-normal temperatures.
HARSH COLD IN EUROPE
Most of Europe continues to deal with bitter cold and snow. Unusually cold conditions as far south as southern Italy and Greece during the coming days may cause problems for a crop area not normally this cold during the winter. A major winter snow storm for the Balkan states will improve snow cover prior to the coldest weather.
