Limited Brazil Rain

OMAHA (DTN) -- Minimal rain for northeastern Brazil, and a mixed rainfall trend in Argentina, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

BRIEF MILD MIDWEST TREND

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a brief round of mild weather in the Midwest during the end of the calendar year 2016. The pattern turns much colder in the 10-day timeframe, due to strong high pressure in Alaska forcing cold Arctic air south into the region. This colder pattern may also be accompanied by a new winter storm system during the weekend of Jan. 7.

DRYNESS REMAINS IN SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains' wheat areas remain dry despite recent stormy patterns in the central U.S. Little to no rain is expected during the next five-to-seven days. A developing colder weather trend in the 10-day timeframe bears watching for possibly a new round of cold-weather stress to winter wheat.

VARIABLE NORTHERN PLAINS CONDITIONS

In the Northern Plains, milder weather and a dry pattern will allow recovery and repair following the blizzard with snow and ice during the Christmas holiday weekend. Temperatures are forecast to turn much lower during the next seven-to-10 days, and the colder pattern also has the potential to bring a new round of snow and strong winds to the region.

NORTHEAST BRAZIL DRYNESS

Across Brazil, the northeastern crop areas are dry with well-under 50% of soil moisture capacity. This sector comprises around 10% of total Brazil soybean acreage. Other crop areas have a mostly favorable soil moisture supply at this time. Soybean harvest is reportedly underway in northern Mato Grosso.

MIXED ARGENTINA RAINFALL PATTERN

In central Argentina, most major crop areas are now at adequate to surplus soil moisture levels after recent heavy rainfall. Some flooding also occurred. Conditions mostly favoring crop development, except in areas of flooding. Additional significant rain is expected early next week. Southeastern crop areas remain dry and in need of rain to avoid production loss.
