OMAHA (DTN) -- Weekend rain in Argentina, and bitter cold over the western Plains wheat areas, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

WEEKEND COLD IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for early-week cold in the Midwest, followed by a warming trend with improving conditions for transportation and livestock. Winter wheat areas of the eastern Midwest had beneficial weekend precipitation.

HARSH SOUTHERN PLAINS COLD

In the Southern Plains, bitter-cold conditions during the past weekend, especially Sunday, threaten winterkill damage on wheat in western areas where snow cover is lacking. Many parts of this region are also stressed by dryness. Low temperatures fell to minus 15 Fahrenheit or colder in west and north-central Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska threatening wheat in areas of shallow or no snow cover.

EARLY-WEEK NORTHERN PLAINS CHILL

In the Northern Plains, snow and very low temperatures over the weekend caused some transportation delays and increase feed usage and stress to livestock. Milder temperatures are expected to develop by midweek.

MORE SHOWERS FOR DELTA

Delta crop areas had rainfall in most of the region during the weekend, ahead of early-week cold conditions. Wheat will benefit from the rain. Meanwhile, it does not appear to be cold enough to threaten the winter wheat crop in these locations.

WEEKEND RAIN FOR SOUTHEAST

In the southeastern U.S., moderate rain fell in Alabama and Georgia during the weekend. The moisture will help to ease dryness issues. More rain is needed, however, to end drought conditions. The pattern turns drier during the next week.

GENERALLY FAVORABLE IN BRAZIL

Across Brazil, mostly favorable conditions for development of early planted corn and soybeans continue. However, northeast areas are drier and will only see light rainfall during this week. This area needs to be monitored, as production drawbacks a year ago began in this part of the country.

ARGENTINA WEEKEND RAIN

Buenos Aires province in Argentina received moderate to locally heavy rain during the weekend. Amounts ranged from .5 to 2 inches (12 to 50 millimeters). This is timely and beneficial rain following a dry and sometimes hot spell over the past six weeks. Additional rain chances are indicated for Argentina during this week.
