Mixed Southern Plains Conditions

OMAHA (DTN) -- Favorable conditions across Brazil, and differentiated precipitation chances in the Southern Plains, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

DRY LATE WEEK IN MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for generally dry conditions in the Midwest through the balance of this week, with a rain and snow combination indicated during the weekend into early next week. Drier conditions will favor the final-stage corn harvest in the Great Lakes. Seasonally cold weather is forecast during the latter half of next week.

VARIABLE SOUTHERN PLAINS FORECAST

In the Southern Plains, dry condition will remain in effect through the balance of this week. A round of light rain and snow is in the forecast for the southern portion of the region during the weekend. Temperatures will be more seasonal, thus cooler, and offer less stress for winter wheat.

SEASONAL IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, light snow is bringing only minimal disruption to transportation and very little stress to livestock, as this is a seasonal occurrence. The next week to 10 days feature the coldest temperatures of the season so far.

RAIN TO CONTINUE IN SOUTHEAST

In the Delta and Southeast, showers and thunderstorms have brought some easing of extreme to exceptional drought conditions; for example, Atlanta, Georgia logged a record 2.3 inches precipitation Tuesday. Drought easing is likely in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and northwestern Georgia. Longer range charts suggest additional drought-easing rains will occur through the southern and eastern Delta and in the southeast later in the five-day and early in the six-to-10-day period.

FAVORABLE BRAZIL CONDITIONS

Across Brazil, scattered showers favor developing soybeans in central Brazil. Mostly favorable conditions for planting and development of crops are in effect through southern areas during this period. Wheat harvest in Rio Grande do Sul has a more favorable set of conditions.

DRY FOR ARGENTINA FIELD WORK

Corn and soybean areas of Argentina will continue to be dry and will turn hotter during the next few days. This should help ease flooding concerns and may dry fields enough to allow fieldwork in the area hit by heavy weekend thunderstorms. A new cold front with the potential to cause heavy thunderstorms moves through Sunday and Monday. The early call on this suggests that the heaviest thunderstorms would occur south of the major corn and soybean belt.

COOL CHINA PATTERN

In central China, cold weather late last week may have slowed development of wheat and rapeseed. Favorable conditions are in effect otherwise.

DRIER SOUTH AFRICA TREND

In South Africa, soil moisture at this time is adequate for crops. However, a hotter and drier trend is developing and will bear watching.
