USDA Weekly Crop Progress

OMAHA (DTN) -- Six percent of the nation's corn was silking and 9% of the soybeans were blooming as of June 26, according to the USDA Crop Progress report released Monday.

Corn silking progress was 1 percentage point ahead of the average and 3 percentage points ahead of last year. Corn condition worsened just slightly to 5% poor to very poor, compared to 4% last week. The good-to-excellent category remained steady at 75%.

"USDA said 75% of the corn crop was rated good to excellent, resulting in a one-point drop in the DTN Corn Condition Index to 180," said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman. "DTN's index was up from 164 a year ago and is above the five-year average of 161. Monday's report is bearish for corn."

Soybean blooming at 9% is 2 percentage points ahead of last year and the five-year average, both at 7%. Soybean conditions worsened slightly to 72% good to excellent, compared to 73% last week.

"USDA said 72% of soybeans were rated good to excellent, resulting in a 1-point drop in the DTN Soybean Condition Index to 173," Hultman said. "DTN's index is up from 154 a year ago and is also above the five-year average of 155. Monday's report is bearish for soybeans."

Winter wheat is 45% harvested, compared to 25% last week, 33% last year and 41% on average. Winter wheat condition improved slightly to 62% good to excellent compared to 61% last week.

"USDA said that 62% of winter wheat was rated good-to-excellent, resulting in a 3-point increase in the DTN Winter Wheat Condition Index to 156," Hultman said. "DTN's index is up from 95 a year ago and well above the five-year average of 63. Monday's report is bearish for winter wheat."

Spring wheat is 56% headed, compared to 28% last week, 42% last year and a 27% average. Spring wheat condition declined to 72% good to excellent, compared to 76% last week.

"Seventy-two percent of spring wheat was rated good-to-excellent, resulting in an 8-point drop in the DTN Spring Wheat Condition Index to 171," Hultman said. "DTN's index is down from 174 a year ago and is below the five-year average of 174. Monday's report is neutral for spring wheat."

Cotton squaring is at 29%, compared to 22% last week, 31% last year and a 33% average. Cotton setting bolls was reported for the first time this growing season at 6%, compared to 4% last year and a 6% average. Cotton condition improved to 56% good to excellent compared to 54% last week. Rice is 16% headed, compared to 8% last week, 13% last year and a 10% average. Rice condition declined slightly to 69% good to excellent compared to 70% last week.

Sorghum is 95% planted compared to 88% last week, 91% last year and a 93% average. Sorghum is 26% headed, compared to 17% last week, 20% last year and a 22% average. Sorghum condition held steady at 70% good to excellent.

Oats are 83% headed, compared to 68% last week, 78% last year and a 69% average. Oats condition declined to 67% good to excellent compared to 70% last week.

Barley is 55% headed, compared to 23% last week, 55% last year and 30% on average. Barley condition declined slightly to 75% good to excellent compared to 77% last week.

Colorado

Hot conditions sustained the pace of crop development while limited, localized precipitation was generally received in central and eastern counties. Days suitable for fieldwork is 6.6 Days up from the previous week's 6.4 days. Topsoil moisture is 2% very poor, 15% short, 78% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture is 3% very poor, 11% short, 82% adequate and 4% surplus. Barley is 50% headed with the five-year average 46%. Barley turning color is 3% with 2% being the five year average. Barley crop condition is 14% fair, 51% good and 35% excellent. Corn is 1% silking with the five year average being 1% as well. Corn condition is 80% good to excellent. Sorghum is 96% planted with a five-year average of 92%. Sorghum emerged is 78% with 56% being the five-year average. Sorghum crop condition is 29% fair, 65% good and 6% excellent. Spring wheat is 33% headed with 49% being the five-year average. Spring wheat coloring is 6% with a five year average of 2%. Spring wheat crop condition is 8% fair, 84% good and 8% excellent. Winter wheat is 86% turning color with a five-year average of 74%. Winter wheat is 31% mature with 32% being the five-year average. Winter wheat harvested is 2% and the five-year average is 15%. Winter wheat crop condition is 67% good to excellent.

Illinois

Hot weather continued last week with scattered rain providing much needed moisture in parts of the state. Wheat harvesting has picked up over the past week. Statewide, the average temperature was 78.4 degrees, 4.6 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.01 inches, 0.10 inch above normal. There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending June 26. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 7% very short, 21% short, 67% adequate, and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 4% very short, 19% short, 73% adequate, and 4% surplus. Corn silking reached 4%, compared to 6% for the five-year average. Corn condition was 71% good to excellent. Soybeans emerged was at 94%, up 6 percentage points from last week. Soybeans blooming reached 7%. Soybean condition was rated 71% good to excellent. Winter wheat harvest jumped to 76% complete, up 38 percentage points from last week. Winter wheat condition was rated 70% good to excellent. Oats headed was at 90%.

Indiana

Storms last week provided much-needed moisture for stressed fields. Precipitation amounts varied widely and dry pockets persisted. Although last week's storms were a relief for some counties they were also a hazard. There were 4.8 days available for fieldwork for the week ending June 26, down 0.5 days from the previous week. Topsoil moisture is 4% very poor, 19% short, 67% adequate and 10% surplus. Subsoil moisture is 4% very poor, 19% short, 70% adequate and 7% surplus. Corn silking was 5% this week with 3% being the five-year average. Corn condition was 73% good to excellent. Soybeans emerged was 95% with 93% being the five-year average. Soybeans blooming is 4% with a five-year average of 6%. Soybeans condition is 74% good to excellent. Winter wheat is 82% mature and winter wheat harvested was 34% with a five-year average of 29%. Winter wheat condition is 75% good to excellent.

Iowa

Iowa experienced highly variable weather conditions ranging from almost no precipitation to heavy rain and isolated hail during the week. Statewide there were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture levels declined to 8% very short, 21% short, 67% adequate and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels also fell to 3% very short, 17% short, 76% adequate and 4% surplus. South-central and southeast Iowa reported the lowest topsoil moisture levels with approximately two-thirds of topsoil moisture rated very short or short. There were scattered reports of corn reaching the silking stage this week. Seventy-nine percent of the corn crop was rated in good-to-excellent condition. Soybeans blooming reached 5%, equal to both last year and the five-year average. Soybean condition rated 77% good to excellent. Oats headed reached 90% this week, two days ahead of last year, and five days ahead of normal. Oats coloring reached 22%, four days ahead of the average. Oat condition rated 81% good to excellent.

Kansas

Temperatures were 6 to 8 degrees above normal across most of the state. Rainfall amounts of one inch or more were reported in southern and central counties, with lesser amounts in the northeast and northwest. There were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 6% very short, 24% short, 65% adequate, and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 3% very short, 20% short, 75% adequate, and 2% surplus. Winter wheat condition was rated 64% good to excellent. Winter wheat harvested was 58%, well ahead of 37% last year, and ahead of the five-year average of 50%. Corn condition rated 65% good to excellent. Corn silking was 17%, ahead of 11% last year and 12% average. Soybean condition 59% good to excellent. Soybeans planted was 95%, ahead of 82% last year, and near 92% average. Emerged was 84%, ahead of 65% last year, and near 83% average. Sorghum condition rated 74% good to excellent. Sorghum planted was 94%, ahead of 88% last year, and near 91% average. Headed was 9%, ahead of 0% both last year and average.

Michigan

There were 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork in Michigan. Topsoil moisture is 18% very short, 42% short, 38% adequate and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture is 12% very short, 36% short, 49% adequate and 3% surplus. The previous week consisted of some intermittent rain which was welcomed by many farmers, but overall, the vast majority of farmers across the State are in need of more rain. Corn crop condition is 63% good to excellent. Soybeans emerged was 96% with 97% being the five-year average. Soybean blooming is 1% with a five-year average at 1%. Soybean crop condition is 63% good to excellent. Winter wheat headed is 95% with a five-year average of 100%. Winter wheat mature is 20% with 5% being the five-year average. Winter wheat crop condition is 74% good to excellent. Oats headed is 59% with a five year average of 64%. Oats crop condition 79% good to excellent.

Minnesota

There were 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Continued wet field conditions in the northern parts of the state have delayed some field activities such as cutting hay and spraying. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 11% short, 74% adequate, and 14% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% very short, 10% short, 74% adequate, and 14% surplus. Minnesota's corn condition rating increased 2 percentage points from the previous week, with 81% of the crop rated in good-to-excellent condition. Soybean condition rated 75% good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from the previous week. Seventy-two percent of the spring wheat acreage was at or beyond the heading stage, 12 days ahead of the five-year average and two days ahead of last year. Six percent of the spring wheat crop was turning color. Spring wheat condition rated 65% good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week. Seventy-eight percent of the oat crop was at or beyond the heading stage, 12 days ahead of average and two days ahead of last year. With 7% of the oat crop turning color, oat condition rated 84% good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from the previous week. Seventy percent of the barley crop had headed, with scattered reports of barley turning color. Barley condition rated 69% good to excellent, up 4 percentage points from the previous week.

Missouri

Temperatures averaged 81.1 degrees, 5.9 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.06 inches statewide, 0.01 inch below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 13% very short, 38% short, 46% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 7% very short, 32% short, 60% adequate and 1% surplus. Corn silking reached 20%, 8 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Corn condition was rated 63% good to excellent. Soybean planting progressed to 96% complete, emerged was 88%, and blooming reached 6%. Soybean condition was rated 57% good to excellent. Cotton squaring was 57% complete, compared to 33% for the five-year average. Winter wheat harvested progressed to 82% complete.

Nebraska

Irrigation was in full swing this past week as temperatures, which averaged 2 to 6 degrees above normal, were accompanied by mostly dry conditions. Dryland crops were beginning to showing signs of stress as soil moisture supplies were drawn down. Rainfall totals of an inch or more were limited to parts of west-central Nebraska and a few eastern counties. Statewide, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 5% very short, 32% short, 60% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 2% very short, 18% short, 77% adequate and 3% surplus. Corn silking was 1%, near the five-year average of 2%. Corn condition was rated 79% good to excellent. Sorghum emerged was 96%, near 93% average. Sorghum condition was rated 83% good to excellent. Soybeans blooming was 8%, equal to the average. Soybeans condition was rated 78% good to excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 90%, ahead of 71% average, and harvested was at 4%, behind 9% average.

North Dakota

Average temperatures were near normal across much of the state. The extreme northwestern part of the state received an inch of rain and, when combined with moisture from recent weeks, was causing some flooding and crop disease issues. Many areas of the state experienced storms that brought very windy conditions which resulted in some crop damage. Some areas also received hail that caused further crop damage. Statewide, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 5% very short, 17% short, 67% adequate and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 4% very short, 18% short, 73% adequate and 5% surplus. Winter wheat headed was 91%, ahead of 73% last year, and coloring was 12%, ahead of 1% last year. Winter wheat condition was rated 73% good to excellent. Durum wheat jointed was 92%, well ahead of 44% for the five-year average, and headed was 47%, well ahead of 19% last year. Durum wheat condition was rated 74% good to excellent. Spring wheat jointed was 92%, well ahead of 62% average, and headed was 60%, well ahead of 23% average. Spring wheat condition was rated 78% good to excellent. Corn silking was 13%, ahead of 1% average. Corn condition was rated 81% good to excellent. Soybeans blooming was 19%, ahead of 6% last year. Soybeans condition was rated 77% good to excellent. Canola blooming was 59%, well ahead of 27% average. Canola condition was rated 85% good to excellent.

Ohio

Rain throughout the state brought relief to many areas while pockets of dryness persisted. Storms passed through the state midweek, boosting soil moisture levels on average, but farmers observed everything from parched ground to standing water, sometimes within the same county. Some wind damage was reported, and other local instances of severe weather was reported throughout the state. Statewide, topsoil moisture was rated 2% very short, 24% short, 64% adequate and 10% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 2% very short, 22% short, 69% adequate and 7% surplus. Corn condition was rated 67% good to excellent. Soybeans were 96% emerged and 1% blooming. Soybean conditions were rated 67% good to excellent. Winter wheat was 54% mature and 4% harvested.

Oklahoma

The rainfall average of Oklahoma was less than half an inch and no district reported more than one inch. Temperatures ranged from 61 degrees at Boise City on June 21 to 103 degrees at Kingfisher on June 23. Precipitation ranged from none in the southeast district to 0.78 inch in the panhandle district. Statewide, topsoil moisture was rated 4% very short, 23% short, 68% adequate and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 3% very short, 18% short, 74% adequate and 5% surplus. Winter wheat harvested reached 87%, up 3 points from normal. Canola harvested reached 89%, down 4 points from normal. Corn silk reached 27%, down 4 points from normal. Corn condition was rated 81% good to excellent. Sorghum planted reached 93%, up 8 points from normal, and headed reached 9%, up 7 points from normal. Soybeans planted reached 80%, up 1 point from normal, and emerged reached 70%, up 3 points from normal. Soybean condition was rated 68% good to excellent.

South Dakota

Soil moisture ratings declined following a predominately dry week. Showers and thunderstorms early in the week brought moisture to parts of central South Dakota. However, much of the state remained dry, stressing crops in some areas as warm, windy conditions returned by week's end. Statewide, topsoil moisture supplies were rated 10% very short, 27% short, 60% adequate and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 7% very short, 22% short, 69% adequate and 2% surplus. Winter wheat coloring was 78%, well ahead of the five-year average of 31%. Winter wheat condition was rated 65% good to excellent. Corn condition was rated 73% good to excellent. Spring wheat headed was 73%, well ahead of 52% average. Spring wheat condition was rated 58% good to excellent. Soybeans emerged was 98%, ahead of 93% average, and blooming was 5%, equal to the average. Soybeans condition was rated 75% good to excellent. Sorghum planted was 99%, emerged was 80% and headed was 8%, ahead of 0% average headed. Sorghum condition was rated 66 good to excellent.

Texas

Areas of the Edwards Plateau and south Texas received up to 6 inches of rainfall while southeast Texas and the Upper Coast received up to 3 inches of rainfall. Other areas of the state observed scattered showers, although the Cross Timbers and the Blacklands received little or no rainfall. Statewide, topsoil moisture was rated 4% very short, 27% short, 58% adequate and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 3% very short, 20% short, 67% adequate and 10% surplus. Corn was 46% silked, 35% in the dough stage, and 26% dented. Corn condition was rated 74% good to excellent. Cotton was 98% planted, 17% squaring and 8% setting bolls. Sorghum was 18% mature and 4% harvested. Soybeans were 96% emerged and 30% blooming. Soybean conditions were rated 61% good to excellent. Winter wheat was 80% harvested, ahead of the average pace of 76%.

Wisconsin

Another hot, stormy weekend bracketed a string of cooler, sunny days this past week. Weekend thunderstorms brought driving rains, high winds and hail in some areas. Scattered storm damage was reported, including lodging in small grains and ponding in some fields. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 9% short, 80% adequate and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 8% short, 84% adequate and 8% surplus. Corn condition was 86% good to excellent. Six percent of the state's expected soybean acres were blooming, nine days ahead of the five-year average. A number of reporters noted that weed control was needed in soybean fields due to delayed spraying. Soybean condition was 84% good to excellent. Winter wheat was 97% headed and 57% was coloring, one week ahead of last year. Winter wheat was 87% in good-to-excellent condition.
