“What’s your crop look like?” “Get any rain last week?” Put farmers together and you can bet weather and crop conditions will dominate the conversation.

That’s the premise behind our series called “View From the Cab.” Each year Progressive Farmer’s parent company, DTN, selects two farmers from different regions of the country to follow through the cropping season.

This year’s correspondents are Ashley Andersen from Blair, Nebraska, and Scott Wallis from Princeton, Indiana.

Ashley Andersen has an infectious love for the life she lives with her husband, Jarett, and their three young children. They farm alongside Jarett’s parents, Tim and Kim Andersen, on a farm that has been in the family for 125 years. Beyond crop conditions, she brings a joyful perspective to the juggling it takes to be a farmer, farm wife and mother.

Scott Wallis likes everything about making a crop of corn and soybeans come to life and coaxing every bushel he can from a plot of land. Scott’s father, Bob, is still a valuable part of the farm team. J.R. Wallis, Scott’s son, and his wife, Nikki, joined the farm in 2014. In January 2019, his son-in-law, Brad Winter, left his job at an electric utility company to join the farm.

It was Scott’s grandfather that started the tradition of recording daily rainfall totals when he bought the southwestern Indiana homestead in 1951. Having those records available is making for interesting comparisons in this challenging farming year.
