First-Calf Heifer Keeps Coming into Heat

Bring in a veterinarian to check out this heifer, it may be treatable. (DTN/Progressive Farmer image by Becky Mills)

Question: I have a first-calf heifer that seems to be coming into heat every few days. What could be causing this?

Answer: She needs to be checked by your veterinarian as soon as possible. She may have a follicular cyst. This can be diagnosed by rectal palpation. If this is the case, several effective protocols are available to resolve the issue. Not every cow with a follicular cyst will respond to treatment, but I have had success in treating them and getting the cow bred. Some cysts will resolve on their own, but I would not take that chance.
