Seed Plots Create Opportunity for Streaming Video of Crop Conditions
OMAHA (DTN) -- DTN/Progressive Farmer and Farmers' Independent Research of Seed Technologies (FIRST) have teamed up to offer an in-field view of crop development around the Corn Belt. This project aims to produce time-lapse video of corn growth progress in FIRST plots in eight locations within five states.
DTN will use the videos to illustrate conditions around the Corn Belt and mid-Atlantic, adding on-the-ground detail regarding conditions the fields are experiencing in this drought-trend year. The images will also help FIRST convey information about the hybrid yield performances in these locations, which will be reported in their Top 30 Harvest Reports this fall.
Current video feed locations are: New Richland, Minnesota; Sanborn, Iowa; Chadwick, Effingham and Gridley, Illinois; Wabash, Indiana; Louisburg, Kansas; and Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania. The video feeds can be found in the DTN Special Projects tab in Video area of online products. On DTNPF.com they can be found here: https://www.dtnpf.com/….
The current time-lapse video from the Gridley plot includes scenes from the June 29 storm and high winds that crossed the area.
The imagery and other data also is being used by DTN Clear Ag agronomic experts and data scientists to validate and improve crop growth and dry-down models by tying observations and site-specific weather, along with management and soils information provided by FIRST.
FIRST's yield trials, conducted since 1997, have become a trusted source of independent corn and soybean yield performance data in the U.S. The organization, run by farmers for farmers, arranges field research trials on more than 200 farms across 15 states.
