MIXED RESULTS FOR TRACTOR SALES IN SEPTEMBER
It is hard to tell with much confidence what the news on September tractor sales means, but there appears to be a line drawn between sales of smaller, less-than-100-horsepower tractors and their larger cousins. That is according to the September Ag Tractor and Combine Report released by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).
Small-tractor sales have seemingly been sputtering to life recently, leaving behind, perhaps, the categories' months-long string of declining sales.
Sales of 40- to 100-horsepower tractors rose 17.3% in September, compared to September last year. That's 5,438 units sold last month, compared to 4,636 units sold in September 2024. AEM's monthly tractor sales report counts 10,336 tractors under 40 horsepower sold in September. That's 2.5% more than was sold in September 2024.
For the year through September, however, small-tractor sales remain below sales during the first nine months of 2024. Sales of less-than-40-horsepower tractors are down 6.3% for the year. Sales of tractors 40 to 100 horsepower are down 2.7%.
The news for larger tractor sales is not good. September sales of tractors 100 horsepower and above were down 11.5% (216 units) compared to September 2024.
Sales of four-wheel-drive tractors are down, too, and as a percentage, fairly sharply. September 2025 sales of four-wheel-drive tractors compared to September 2024 are down 32.7%, or 146 units.
For the year so far, sales of 100-plus-horsepower tractors are down 24.7%. Four-wheel-drive tractor sales are down 38.9%.

Combine sales also remained down sharply. Sales in September 2025 compared to September 2024 were off 21.9% (a total of 116 combines). For the year, combine sales are down 39.7% compared to the first nine months of 2024, or nearly 1,800 combines.
