Top 5 Things to Watch
Short Market Week as Harvest Begins
OMAHA (DTN) -- Here are the Top 5 things the DTN Newsroom is tracking for the week of Aug. 31. Watch for coverage of these and other topics throughout the week on our subscription platforms as well as on www.DTNPF.com.
Note that all report release and webinar times are Central Daylight Savings Time unless otherwise noted.
1. Short trade week: Major U.S. markets are closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday, and Canada markets are closed for that country's Labour Day. DTN market coverage will start with our Early Word and Before the Bell commentary Tuesday morning.
2. Combines are rolling: As we traveled the Midwest this past week, we're seeing combines beginning to roll around the Interstate 70 corridor. Harvest in the southern states is going full steam as dry weather continues in that area.
3. Crop diseases increase: We'll track the increase in late-season soybean diseases, including red crown rot and sudden death syndrome. Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) damage is also showing up in some areas.
4. More cool weather on way: A slow-moving system in the Plains will continue showers generally west of the Mississippi River into early next week. Another strong cold front will move through behind it, bringing in another burst of cold air to most areas east of the Rockies, reinforcing the lower temperatures out there right now. Some areas that really need a rain in the southern and eastern Corn Belt are probably going to stay dry or see very little rainfall as dryness and drought expand in these areas, a bad end to an otherwise good summer of weather.
5. Reports due this week: Monday, no reports due to Labor Day holiday. Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. we'll see the S&P Final Manufacturing PMI. Then at 9 a.m. Construction Spending and Multivariate Core Trend Inflation data is out. At 10 a.m. we'll see latest Grain Inspections. At 2 p.m. Fats and Oils and Grain Crushing reports, then at 3 p.m. USDA NASS Crop Progress released. Wednesday at 9 a.m. we'll see Job Openings and Factory Orders data. At 1 p.m. the Fed Beige Book update is out. Thursday at 7:15 a.m. we'll see ADP Employment, followed at 7:30 a.m. with Initial Jobless Claims, U.S. Productivity for August, and U.S. Trade Deficit.
