D6 RIN Up 8.6% in July, D4s Down 2.4%

CRANBURY, N.J. (DTN) -- The number of renewable identification numbers generated in July was mixed among the nested categories under the Renewable Fuel Standard, with RIN generation for baseline D6 compliance credits up from June while new D4 RINs for the month eased, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's Moderated Transaction System.

There were 1.365 billion D6 RINs generated in July on volume of 1.358 billion gallons of renewable fuel, with the nested category overwhelmingly satisfied with conventional corn-based ethanol. The July totals reflect a 108.5 million increase in D6 RINs on 105.7 million more gallons than in June. July's D6 RIN generation was the most for 2018.

For 2018 through July, 8.808 billion D6 RINs have been generated on volume of 8.755 billion gallons of renewable fuel.

The generation of D4 biomass-based diesel RINs declined for the second consecutive month in July, down 108.5 million RINs to 309.9 million, with 2.061 billion D4 RINs generated in 2018 through July. July's RIN generation was on volume of 202.9 million gallons of qualified biodiesel and renewable diesel produced or imported, down 105.7 million gallons from June, with volume for the first seven months of 2018 at 1.341 billion gallons.

July marked the third consecutive month in which D4 RIN generation was below the comparable month in 2017. The volume of qualified biodiesel and renewable diesel produced or imported is down 22.0 million gallons or 1.6% in 2018 through July against the comparable year-ago period.

A qualified gallon of biomass-based diesel generates 1.5 D4 RINs.
