D6 RINs Generated in December Dip
NEW YORK (DTN) -- In December, the renewable fuels industry generated nearly 1.28 billion D6 renewable identification numbers, down a little more than 30 million from November, according to the latest data from the Environmental Protection Agency released on Thursday, Jan. 18. Meanwhile, D4 RIN generation was up 47.2 million in December from November to a four-month high at 363.6 million.
RINs, which are used to show compliance with the Renewable Fuel Standard, are generated when a qualified renewable fuel is produced or imported. The EPA is the administrator of the federal program.

D6 RINs are generated by renewable fuel primarily satisfied by corn-based ethanol, with D4 RINs generated by biomass-based diesel.
In December, EPA qualified 1.27 billion gallons of renewable fuel production and 236.4 million gallons of biomass-based diesel output in meeting the RFS standard.
There are several nested categories under the RFS, with biomass-based diesel considered an advanced biofuel that affords a higher RIN production against the D6 RIN, which serves as the benchmark RIN value.
