METEOROLOGICAL DISCUSSION

The northern branch of the jet stream features a weak ridge over Alaska and northwest Canada and a trough over north-central Canada and northeast Canada extending across northern Greenland. This is producing cool/cold temperatures across southern Canada. The southern branch of the jet features a trough in the eastern pacific/Gulf of Alaska. A ridge over the interior western U.S. A trough over the central and interior eastern U.S. A trough over southeast Canada and a ridge in the western atlantic. Centers of subtropical high pressure are located in the western atlantic and off the west coast of Mexico, north-central Mexico and the southeast Gulf of Mexico.

EXTENDED OUTLOOK

The operational run of the U.S. and European models are in fair-good agreement during the outlook period. During the 6-10 day period the northern branch of the jet stream will feature a weak trough across Alaska, northwest and north-central Canada and a ridge over northeast Canada and Greenland. This will produce variable temperatures across southern Canada. The southern branch of the jet will feature a trough in the eastern pacific/Gulf of Alaska. A ridge over the western U.S. A trough in the eastern U.S. and a ridge in the far western atlantic. The trough is expected to be far enough to the east to limit precipitation in the central U.S. except in the eastern Midwest at the beginning of the period. Temperatures will be variable, milder out ahead of systems, cooler behind them. During the 5 day period significant precipitation associated with this trough is expected to impact the northern Plains and western Midwest.

This pattern will feature variable temperatures in the Midwest. Precipitation near to above normal west, near to below normal east during the next 5 days, near to below normal west, near to above normal east days 6-10. The northern plains will see variable temperatures. Precipitation above normal during the next 5 days, near to below normal days 6-10. The southern plains will see variable temperatures. Precipitation mostly below normal. The Delta states will see variable temperatures. Rainfall below normal during the next 5 days, near to above normal days 6-10.
