Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- A large central U.S. storm system, and generally favorable conditions in South America, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

STORMY PERIOD FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for a major late winter storm across the Midwest this weekend, with a second major system also possible during the middle of next week. These systems threaten more flooding over south, central and east areas and more heavy snow in the northwest. The first system, this weekend, is likely to cause moderate to heavy snow from the eastern Dakotas and Minnesota to west and north Wisconsin, and possibly extreme northern Iowa. Transport and travel will likely be affected. Livestock stress will also be high with these storms.

NORTHERN PLAINS SNOWSTORM

In the Northern Plains, a weekend snowstorm is expected to bring 6 to 12 inches of snow to the eastern Dakotas and Minnesota. A second storm is projected to affect the Dakotas and Minnesota next Wednesday. The early call on that second system is for another chance for moderate to heavy snow along with high winds. See the above discussion. The impact on livestock, travel and transport will be high with both systems. In addition to these storms, snow pack will continue to build in the region, which increases the risk for severe flooding when this melts during the spring.

SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN AND SNOW

In the Southern Plains, a dry weekend is expected. The pattern turns wetter during next week. Moderate to heavy precipitation, mostly rain, will provide adequate to surplus moisture for spring growth of winter wheat. However, the rain will also increase muddy conditions throughout the livestock feedlot areas in west Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. The snow threat is limited to perhaps northwest Kansas, northeast Colorado, west and central Nebraska, but this could change depending on the exact track of the expected storm.

CONTINUED FAVORABLE BRAZIL RAIN

Brazil's weather pattern is again favorable for developing second-crop (safrinha) corn, with periods of moderate to locally heavy rain for all but the northeast sector. The soybean harvest continues in central Brazil and is running well ahead of normal. Favorable weather is also in effect for late filling, maturing and harvesting soybeans in southern Brazil.

VARIABLE ARGENTINA PRECIPITATION

In Argentina, precipitation over the next seven days will be variable, with moderate to heavy totals in the north and lighter amounts in the south. The general scenario is still favorable for late-season crop development and early harvest.
