Additional Harsh Midwest Cold

OMAHA (DTN) -- Continued bitter-cold conditions over the Midwest, and more heat and dryness in Brazil, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Wednesday.

MORE BITTER MIDWEST COLD

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for the Midwest to have another round of very cold air during midweek. Some of the coldest weather in years during the next couple of days will affect transportation and stress livestock. Some locales may see all-time record lows. The northern portion of the soft red winter wheat belt, northwest Ohio, may see lows near minus 15 Fahrenheit this week. This might affect the crop in areas where snow cover is not adequate to protect the crop from this extreme cold.

WARMING SOUTHERN PLAINS FORECAST

In the Southern Plains, this week's cold wave does not appear to have spread into the region; thus, winter wheat avoided cold-air stress. A notable warming trend is forecast through the next week, which may make the crop more vulnerable to later-season cold snaps.

DRY-WEATHER STRESS IN BRAZIL

Across Brazil, hot or very hot and mostly dry weather through southern and east-central areas will maintain high stress on pod-filling soybeans, late-filling full season corn, and developing sugarcane and coffee for at least a few more days. Dry and hot conditions favor a more rapid harvest pace for soybeans and also a more rapid planting pace for safrinha corn. Dryness and heat will also affect early development of safrinha corn if this pattern does not break soon. Showers are in the forecast for the weekend and early next week, but more will be needed to halt the steady decline of crop prospects going forward.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE ARGENTINA TREND

Crop areas in Argentina have generally favorable weather for developing corn and soybeans in central crop areas, with adequate to surplus soil moisture and only brief periods of hot weather.
